I saw the review heading Smirnoff Ice and immediately thought of my wife, funny how products remind you of people.

This is a drink that my wife is addicted too, not that she is an alcoholic, but whenever we go out, this is the only drink that she asks for.

The reason, well let me try and tell with the help of my wife’s vast knowledge on this subject.

Smirnoff Ice first hit the bars in our city (Lincoln) in the mid to late 1990’s with the red labelled version, at the time when alcopops were being introduced in all bars, clubs and pubs across the country. I might add that the prices were not too different to the prices they are now, very expensive when you compare them to other drinks you buy across the counters at licensed premises and supermarkets.
The first Smirnoff Ice came in a 275ml size bottle, which was the average size for all alcopops at the time.
The looks, plain clear glass bottle with a red label that is the same shape as the Smirnoff Vodka bottle, but smaller. The colour of the drink is like the old fashioned lemonade that is milky in colour.

Price, well it varied between £2.75 and £3.50 in the bars, clubs and pubs. The price today in the same places have not really changed apart from the so called discounted pubs and happy hours in places like Witherspoons, where you can buy a 275ml bottle for £1.99. It still isn’t a cheap night out if you lady or gentleman friend is drinking these, but who cares, as long as you enjoy the drink and have a good night out, that’s got to be worth the prices they charge.

The taste. Well this is where both my wife and I can give our opinion, as when I run out of beer in the fridge, I usually start drinking my wife’s Smirnoff Ice, not that I am an alcoholic either, but they do tend to be very refreshing when they are stored in the fridge. It’s very important that you drink Smirnoff Ice cold because if it’s warm, it leaves an u
npleasant taste and feels like it leaves a coating on your teeth.
The flavour is predominantly like lemon with a hint of vodka, not that you would distinguish it from any other clear alcohol, all you taste is a hint of sprit within the lemon.
It’s not a still drink either, it’s fizzy but not as fizzy as pop and I think they have got this just right.

Just as you thought it couldn’t get any better, they brought out a Smirnoff Ice with a black label, this also looks just like the Smirnoff black label vodka that you can buy, but in a 275ml size bottle, also it’s clear and to be honest, tastes similar to the other Smirnoff Ice, only a little bit stronger, without the overwhelming taste of the lemon. For someone like myself that likes less sweet drinks, this is the one for me, but saying that unfortunately, my wife also likes it. Oh well, I will just have to keep trying different drinks until I find one that she doesn’t like.

As for the bottle sizes, my wife is in heaven, they now have a 1.5lt bottle in both varieties that can be purchased from your local supermarket. Also Morrisons and Asda have special offers on from time to time where you can buy 8 x 275ml bottles for £8, now I think she will become an alcoholic. Only joking dear.

Not useful because this is a review of 'smirnoff ice', not smirnoff vodka & therefore appears in the wrong category.
