Advantages: Tasty, easy to drink, refreshing and very cheap when on offer!

Disadvantages: Not quite the real deal of Corona

I am a big fan of Corona, the other popular Mexican bottled lager served with a slice of lime, but I have to admit I was sceptical about this rival to my favourite summer beer when my other half picked them up on special offer for a night in recently.

The idea with these lagers, like with Corona, it to serve them with a slice of lime in the top. The idea of doing this in Mexico was not, as many people think, to add to the taste of the lager (although I do think it adds a certain something!), but to keep flies and other tropical bugs out of the beer. Personally I have got so used to drinking these lagers with the lime in that they just dont taste right without it any more!

So, we cracked open a couple of bottles and I have to say that I was pretty impressed with the flavour of the Sol. It is quite similar to Corona (although it costs a lot less) and if anything just doesnt taste as strong. It is incredibly drinkable though and equally as refreshing on a hot day. You do have to ensure that it is served very chilled to get the best from it, there is nothing worse than a warm bottle of lager.

This lager is only 3.5% so its not going to knock you off your feet too easily but is a nice mellow drink.

I do think this is a worthy rival to Corona, especially given the difference in price. With a lime wedged in the top I think I would be hard pushed to tell the difference if a blindfold test was conducted, it is remarkably light, refreshing and easy to drink.

The co-op are currently offering these beers at £3 for a 4 pack and its worth noting that the Discovery range of mexican foods are also running a current promotion where you get a voucher inside the Fajita dinner kits worth £2 off a four pack, making for some bargain beer - I used my £2 voucher at Asda where the 4 pack was £3.21 so effectively I bought some of these for around 30p a bottle!

Grab some now while its on special offer!

Summary: A great summer beer, perfect for barbeques and garden parties
