Advantages: Tastes gorgeous, cheap, Toffee Apples taste amazing
Disadvantages: Not strong in the slightest
Mmm Sourz. The thought of downing shots usually fills me with dread as the things usually taste like paint stripper, but Apple Sourz, the wimp shot of choice, is different. Weaker than things like tequila and sambucca by far, it also tastes about ten million times better. Shame about the low alcohol content!
The looks
Apple Sourz comes in the standard 70cl bottle size with an apple on it, the word "Sourz" and a black lid. If it wasnt for the radioactive green liquid inside, the packaging could be described as a bit on the boring side, but the colour of the noxious brew states what this stuff is...designed for students and for those who are probably slightly young to be drinking the alcohol. Plain and functional.
The price
Asda, according to their online site, sell this stuff for a mere £8.48...which surprises me as I thought it sold more in the £12 region. In pubs this is usually one of the cheaper shots. My usual haunt, Opium rock bar in Edinburgh's stinky Cowgate, sells shots for £1-£2 depending on the time of night. For your money, you dont get a whole lot of alcohol, a mere 15% by volume, compared to 40 odd for your standard pub spirit. Apparently a bottle contains ten units.
The taste and smell
Sourz has a sharp, tangy and extremely appley smell which hits you pretty hard...as will the lack of alcohol in it. Upon drinking, it has a tangy, sour (obviously) apple taste much like the sour apple candies you can get. Its a gorgeous shot if you like sweet tasting stuff...fruity, sour and absolutely delish. It has a nice tangy bite to it and my favourite thing about it is I cant even detect the taste of alcohol, it just tastes of apple sweets!
The image
Lets face it, if you are a bloke buying Apple Sourz you are going to get the label of being a bit of a wimp...we all know that aside from Dooleys Toffee its the girliest shot you could possibly order in a bar. If you want to be macho and get wrecked you'll want to choose something stronger...if you like your alcohol not to taste like it, go for this.
The damage
As I've said, at 15% a few shots of this isnt going to have you legless...it has to be said that Apple Sourz must be the worlds most pointless shot. Surely the point of a shooter is to take in as much noxious percentage per mouthful as possible...a shot that actually tastes nice will always be pointless as its a tad weak. Having said that, I always buy it for the taste when my mates are downing tequila.
Other options than straight shots
Apple Sourz and lemonade: a refreshing, zingy delicious drink that reminds me somewhat of long vodkas because of the sharp flavour. A nice choice for a few drinks on a summers day.
Apple sourz and cranberry: Apple and cranberry. Yummy. Nuff said.
Applejacks: Shots of apple sourz and jack daniels for the slightly more gutsy wimp.
Toffee apples: my personal favourite. Take a split shot glass, fill one half with Dooleys toffee liqueur and the other with apple sourz. Line up the split with your nose (it gets messy otherwise) and shoot. The creamy yummy delight of Dooleys and the appley zing of Apple sourz. Gorgeous!
Lets face it, apple sourz is neither the drink to prove your hardcore-ness or get drunk off of, but personally I'd rather drink something weaker that tastes nice and try to avoid getting so trollied that I can walk. One for the soft drinkers among us!
Apologies about the lack of info about the other sourz, I havent tried them, I'm too obsessed with the apple one!
Summary: Its appley and sour. Thats all folks
