Advantages: Nce on it's own, useful for cocktails.
Disadvantages: Well, it does have Alcohol in it.
Southern Comfort, sounds like some kind of liqueur from the deep south in the good old U.S. of A. and it is! It has been under this name since the turn of the Century, (1900 not 2000) and was on the go even before then. It originally used to be called "Collars and Buttons".
The drink itself is a Whiskey Liqueur, containing spices, and surprisingly fruit! The blend must be right, because this drink has stood the test of time since 1889 (according to the web site, although Wikipedia say 1874) I am sure this drink will still be popular when we have all gone. Although this is a Whiskey Liqueur, don't be put off just because you may not like Whiskey, the taste is very individual, and this also contains Peach, Orange, Vanilla, and Cinnamon!
There is a web site - www.southerncomfort.com - I recommend you take a look. There are a good few interactive things on here, and the "Drink Recipes Handbook" is rather good, although not surprisingly the recipes do tend to contain Southern Comfort!
As for the price, it is available everywhere in 70cl glass bottles, these are around the £15 mark, although you get better value if you find Litre bottles, these tend to be about £19 or so.
Southern Comfort can be drunk on it's own, or in a wide variety of cocktails, some examples are:-
Alabama Slammer.
Red Death.
A Piece of Ass.
Red Devil.
Greek Sex on the Beach.
Crash & Burn.
'57 Chevy.
Sloe Comfortable Screw. (I never knew this contained Southern Comfort).
There were many others, however the very first cocktail containing this beverage, was the "Scarlett O'Hara". Gone with the wind had just been released, and this concoction was invented as a tribute. That was in 1939, and the ingredients included Cranberry Juice, and also Fresh Lime.
You will always hear of this being called Southern Comfort, however the "Trade name" is SoCo. The bottle is very chunky, and the label looks very authentic, just as it deserves to be.
The actual address of the Company is:-
Southern Comfort Company,
Louisville,
KY ©2007
U S A of course.
If you have never tried this, but rather fancy it, you don't have to buy a full bottle, just ask at your local Pub, they have this everywhere!
As they say on the Southern Comfort web site:-
START AND END THINGS RIGHT. DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
Summary: A lovely drink, but perhaps an acquired taste.
