Advantages: This is beer we're talking about
Disadvantages: You could drink far too much of it very easily
Drifting through Morrisons excellent off-licence section the other day, my eye was drawn towards the display of St Peter's beers. Not just because it's a brand unfamiliar to me but because of the distinctive shape of the bottles. Very retro; green glass, green top for this brew, brown for others and a beautiful oval profile with the brewer's logo embossed above the very simple cream and green oval label. The brewers are making a very bold statement here, saying that this is a beer which deserves attention. Does it, then? Oh yes! Very much so. It is indeed golden in colour. It looks like a light lager and has a smell reminiscent of German beers. It is though, most definitely an ale and one with a lovely grainy finish. It is very drinkable, not overtly hoppy and bitter. I think it would go down very well with someone who does not particularly care for the heavier beers; dare I say it, this may prove very popular with the ladies. At 4.7% abv it's potent but not terribly so. Having said that, don't even think about driving - it's still alcohol. Turn the bottle round and it's all explained on the back label. There is a mix of traditional and lager malts used which would explain the distinctive, non-beery aroma and presumably the light colour. This would be perfect for a warm summer evening so as summer's here - go get, open and enjoy.

- 30/07/01 Much as I have come to love German beer, there are times when I could murder a bottle or two of something like this... |

- 11/06/01 It is tasty isn't it. I spotted the brewery on the way up to Norfolk a couple of weeks ago, it's near Bungay and is signposted as a tourist attraction. |

- 10/06/01 I bought this just 'cos I liked the bottle (how shallow am I?), but it turned out to be a really tasty beer. |
