Known as "wife beater" in some circles Stella Artois is one of the stronger lagers you can buy in the United Kingdom. I must be honest the only time I really drink lager is on a hot day in the summer and even then I would only have the odd bottle of a half pint. It is marketed as a premium brand lager originating from Belgium, it is certainly a lot stronger than most other tap lagers at just over 5% I think. It is best served chilled in a long glass in my opinion, I would never drink it straight from the bottle. It has a nice full bodied look to it. Taste wise it can be very refreshing when you have a thirst on and I find that although ... Read the complete review

Like many innocent, starry eyed teenagers going to college for the first time I fell in love with the first full bodied blonde I set my eyes on. She’d been around a bit, she was experienced, I could not resist her charms and very soon I was under her spell. After some good times and some bad times our relationship ended and at that point I think finally I stopped being a boy and became a man. I’m talking about my first love Stella, Stella Artois to be precise my preferred drink when I was younger and less wise. Now in my thirties and a keen ale drinker, I have left Stella firmly behind. To most real beer fans the ‘L’ ... Read the complete review

It’s time for my first venture into the world of consumer durables so here goes. I spent my Christmas with my good friend Stella Artois. Renowned for it’s sharp, dry taste Stella is one of the most famous of mainstream lagers. Where did it come from and where did it all start? Well, Stella comes from a town called Leuven in Belgium. The original brewery was known as “Den Horen” or “The Horn” and dates back to 1366. In 1708 Sebastian Artois was made Master Brewer. He proceeded to hand his skills down to the following generations. The family house became known as the Artois brewery in 1717. The modern day bevvie came ... Read the complete review

I used to be a big fan of Stella Artois, as I fell for all the marketing and advertising of the brand as a premium lager. A high alcohol content (5.2%), coupled with a high price, and the history of being a traditional Belgian beer makes you think that you are getting something... 'reassuringly expensive'. However, in my opinion, you are getting something that tastes like it is full of chemicals, having a very dry taste in your mouth, along with quite a sweet undercurrent. Behind its light golden colour, and thick head, lies a very strong beer, that through personal experience, can very well live up to its nickname of wife-beater. ... Read the complete review

Stella is frequently lent the term "wife beater", and is seen as something of a drink associated with chavs because of its strong alcohol volume, but it is largely misunderstood, and is in fact a tasty, relaxing beer with a real kick to it. Most people are intelligent enough to know that even a truckload of Stella won't turn you into a violent psychopath unless there's a sufficient mental element there already, and so I think it is definitely unfair that Stella gets lumbered with such insults, particularly when there are far stronger, cheaper beers out there such as Tennants which would surely be far more effective and potent for those that way ...
