Advantages: easy to drink, crisp, full flavour
Disadvantages: tastes horrible warm
I had long held the idea that cider in all of its forms was the drink of choice for those scally 12 year olds who harras you outside of the corner shop into buying them 'ciggies'.
That all changed on my first night at university last year however when i had my first pint of Strongbow the undisputed king of cider!
I wandered into the bar with my new corridor mates and was left with the almost impossible task of choosing form just Carling and Strongbow on tap, not being a great lover of lager especially the horrid Carling I opted for a drink i now consider my favourite.....Stronngbow.
I discovered that cider is much easier to drink than lager and goes down really well it has a slight tangy taste which kicks in after every sip but overall the taste of apples (which it is made of) is what you mainly experience. The taste can differ as dry cider is drier and sweet cider is sweeter (obviously), i much prefer the sweet stuff as it has a much fruiter taste to it.
I have also discovered that cider can get you drunk very quickly even though it is only 5.3% ABV, a couple of pints for even the hardened drinker can cause the comical effects of alcohol (although being drunk is no laughing matter, especially the morning after!).
In the pubs it costs roughly the same as a pint of lager so expect to pay anywhere between £1.50 and £2.50 but this is all dependent upon the class of establishment that you are in.
In the shops you can buy you Strongbow in three forms be it by the can (440ml) around £1 a can (cheaper in bulk e.g. 24 can case for around £15)
The glass bottle slightly more expensive than cans as the bottles are smaller but still not too expensive.
Or by the large 2 litre plastic bottle (you know the one!!). These cost around £3 and are therfore exceptional value for money and my choice for sitting at home watching the football. In all three cases cider costs around the same if not slightly less than lager equivalents.
In conclusion i would recommend this drink to everybody (over 18) but especially to those who want to have a good night cheaply or those who just ccan not get the taste for lager that everybody says you will get.
