Advantages: Taste

Disadvantages: A little expensive.

Summer is around again and despite the typical mixed British weather we have had some truly boiling days. These are the times I love to crack open a can of cider and relax in the back garden. Normally I'm a red wine or whiskey kind of girl but in hot weather cider is always my drink of choice. And my choice of cider is normally the delicious bevvy that is Strongbow.

~What is it?~
Strongbow is Britain's most popular cider and is a refreshing and tasty drink. It is 5.3% proof(but 4.5% in draughts in pubs) and comes in 440ml cans. It was launched in 1960 in England and is still brewed in Hertfordshire today. Strongbow is a dry cider and is owned by the Bulmer's company. A little piece of trivia is that the cider is named for an English 12th century knight whose nickname was Strongbow (makes sense when you think about it doesn't it.)

~Taste~
Despite being made fron bitter-sweet cider apples I would definitely describe Strongbow as a sweet drink though not overly so. The taste is crisp and very refreshing hence it being my preference on those hot summer days. I always drink mine very cold and preferably wih ice as I feel this improves the flavour. It is always very fresh tasting and I prefer it to other leading brands such as Magners etc as it does have a bit of a larger element to it as well. The taste of apples is not overwhelming (which is something I dislike in an alcoholic drink) and it isn't too fizzy.

One thing to remember is that Strongbow is quite strong and one can contains 2.3 units which constitutes the recommended daily amount for a woman (2-3 units.) So remember to drink responsibly (I'm not lecturing here just quoting the can!)

The colour theme is yellow, black and silver which is pretty much typical of all ciders. However, it is simple and memorable meaning if you see one of the famous Stronbow adverts on television you are likely to remember it for the next time you go shopping. There is a little logo of a man with a longbow reminding you of the drinks heritage and who it was named after. In my opinion, a very effective package design.

It isn't the cheapest of alcohol and is generally aroung £3.50 for 4 cans from a supermarket. However, Strongbow is on offer at £3 for 4 cans in Morrisons at the moment which I think is good value.

I would recommend this drink as I think it falls into the gap between larger and alcopop(simply because of the sweetness) and so would make a nice change to anyone who usually favoured these beverages. A perfect British drink for the (fingers crossed) wonderful British summer!

Summary: The perfect summer drink
