Advantages: No one will steal your drink

Disadvantages: You won't have your drink stolen

Despite not being a fan of of Ciders on the whole I'm also not tone to turn down a free drink, so when a a free can of Cider was offered it was taken...it'd be rude to say no...right? Anyway Strongbow is a Cider drink, based like most traditional Ciders around apples this is a favourite of those wanting to save a few penny's. With the recent rise (and rise) of the more premium Ciders like Bulmers and Magners, they have become fashionable drinks for some reason. With Kopparberg also on the up as a sweet lager, that again is slightly higher in price than perhaps people would be happy to part with for a single drink.

So Strongbow, as a slightly cheaper drink, and ones that's been around for years, as a result becoming one of the drinks my parents and grandparents have been drinking for as long as I can remember. Coming in a green and yellow can that has a little logo with a crossbow man on it as the drinks mascot, it's a can that to the best of my knowledge hasn't changed in years.

The drink, as all drinks I get in cans has to be poured into a glass for personal pleasure as drinking from cans is pretty much criminal, tainting the flavour (always making it taste metallic) and feeling too cold to drink inside the mouth anyway. The drink is a smooth amber colour, which did form a head that was soon to dissipate, though the drink did still have bubbles flying up and down inside the glass well after the froth was gone.

At 5.3% I was expecting this to taste more of alcohol than apple to be honest, which was probably a good thing, as, despite thinking apple Tango was nice I think it was probably a one off and wouldn't like most apple flavoured things. And a 440ml can (odd size isn't it?) would be far too much of something I didn't want to drink to finish it (though we have got blackcurrant I guess if it's that bad). The drink has a strong sour apple taste to it, a bit like the over powering smell of cooking apples as opposed to the taste of the more normal apples that you might find in a normal fruit bowl.

The taste is that of quite an angry apple, willing to say hello to your throat with a swift jab to let you know it's there, not a great taste, infact it's rather "take it or leave it" in taste. It's acceptable with out being any better, it's average with out being great, it's drinkable but not worth buying, it's the sort of thing that if offered...well yeah maybe I would accept it again but that's only because it'd be rude not to. The taste is sour and not particularly nice, the pee coloured Apple Tango was a much nicer flavoured drink, and if given some additional alcohol would have been a much better drink than this. The darker colour, stronger apple taste and whatever else they've added makes the drink rather dislikeable. Oddly I'd rather have white lighting (don't say a word) as not only is it cheap, but it'll get you drunk enough to forget how bad it tastes by the end of the container. Yes very true responsible drinking is highly encouraged.... but sex before marriage is a sin I personally couldn't care about either, I drink to get drunk, not to have poor apple drinks down my gullet.

Overall if your a "responsible" drinker and like apple juices...go for a pint of Tango, if you want to get drunk...drink something that tastes better than this. The idea that this is refreshing is hardly compelling on the evidence given in the can. If your a cider drinker you might like it, though personally I think you should go to Kopparberg.

Summary: I may need to turn down a free drink if it is one of these next

I quite like the angry apple taste although its colour can be a bit off-putting...Eleanor x

Don't like Cider and can't stand Strongbow either! But also wouldn't reject it as a free drink..
