Recently I read a very positive review on this site for peppermint tea. I absolutely love a good cup of peppermint tea and this was a brand I had yet to try. I noted that Summerdown peppermint tea was available from Waitrose so looked out for it when I was next in my local Waitrose. I soon found the pretty turquoise box and was pleased to find the tea was on offer at £1.99 for 25 tea bags.
Summerdown peppermint tea is a very different animal to most other brands of peppermint tea that use harsh, imported peppermint. Summerdown uses the rare, traditional English black mitcham mint to make its tea bags. The company state that Black Mitcham is mint that our great grandparents would have known and had been lost for generations. About 10 years ago, Summerdown reintroduced Black Mitcham mint to Britain.Summerdown now grows, harvests and distills the mint on its farms in Hampshire. The tea bags are made using the peppermint leaves that are dried and then infused with the peppermint oil. Reading the ingredients panel on the box I can see that the tea bags contain only pure black Mitcham peppermint leaf and oil with no other added ingredients.
On opening the box I was immediately struck by the very strong smell of peppermint. Each tea bag is individually wrapped in a turquoise wrapper with a very tasteful sketch of a peppermint leaf on the front. You will need to use one tea bag for each cup of tea and two for a pot. Pour on freshly boiled water and leave the tea bag in the cup to infuse for a few minutes. I usually make my tea in a cup and leave the bag in for about 2-3 minutes.
The small of peppermint really is very strong, great if you have a cold! The taste is simply wonderful! The clean flavour of peppermint is really refreshing and makes a lovely change from more traditional tea. I have been drinking a lot of this tea during the recent hot weather and find it very thirst quenching.
Not only does this tea smell and taste delicious but its good for you too. As there is no added milk there are few calories to worry about. Peppermint is excellent for your digestion and gentle on your stomach, it's great to drink if you have a hangover or have overindulged!
Summerdown tea bags are available from Waitrose and selected farm shops; there is a full list on the summerdown website. I paid £1.99 for a box of 25 tea bags. If you like peppermint tea then you will love this tea!
