Advantages: Very drinkable drink, even for those who don't like much alcohol; great to mix in lots of drinks

Disadvantages: Too sweet; if not drank in moderation can be disasterous; sticky sticky

Let me tell you a story.......

Once upon a time there was a teenage girl of 15 and one Saturday night she had arranged to go to a party at a friend's house. It made a change from hanging out at the local bandstand in town drinking dodgy cider and 20/20 though and she was really quite looking forward to it, now all she needed was something to drink. At 15 she was clearly underage to be drinking, but looking that little bit older she walked into her local supermarket and stood browsing the shelves of the alcohol department. There was so much to choose from, all different types of bottle, all different colours and the most wierd and wonderful names ever. The choice was a hard one. However, her eyes turned to a clear bottle full of a pinkish liquid, Taboo and the decision was made.

It said that Taboo was a mixture of white wine and vodka, both of which she had tried briefly before and then they were blended with exotic fruit juices. Yummmmm, having a sweet tooth she imagined that maybe the fruit juices would provide some sweetness to the often bitter taste of alcohol that she really disliked. It came in a long tall bottle and was 14.9% alcohol and sold at around £5 (it now retails at £7.49 in 2001).

At the party she read that Taboo was best served over lemonade with a little bit of ice to make it refreshing. She set about fixing herself and a friend a glass to try. It looked lovely, it was a light pink shade with a touch of orange and it smelt of summer and so so sweet. To taste she wondered why she had never tried this before as it was so drinkable. It tasted fruity and there was no hint of bitterness and she couldn't believe there was actually vodka in it.

As the night went on the girl continued to drink more and more taboo and by 10 pm she was really quite drunk. However, it was then that she came up with the "bright idea" of mixing some cocktails and she discovered that her friend had a great cocktail book and
then there was always that well tried and tested method of just throwing a bit of everything in!

Firstly, she mixed up a taboo woo woo, which she couldn't resist after the name. This contained taboo mixed with even more vodka and some cranberry huice to give it an even stronger colour. This was definitely a taboo with a real woo woo!

She went away had a dance with a guy that she had fancied for ages, it was mad as everyone was dancing on the sofas, tables and those sensible few on the floor. Pheeeww, it was time for another drink. Feeling rather happy and pleased with herself she decided to splash out and she mixed some taboo with some champagne that someone had bought (these were the British version of the kids from Beverley Hills 90210, they were bought up on champagne!). This was called a "Champoo" and all of a sudden everyone wanted one.

To spread the 2 bottles of Taboo around with everyone she set about mixing another cocktail, taboo with lemonade and lime, a Taboo Voodoo. This was another big hit and she returned to the dance floor to continue taboo wooing the guy from school.

It was nearing the end of the night and it seemed like a real waste to leave the taboo so she and this guy ended up sitting in the garden (a few x-rated scenes have been omited) drinking taboo straight ovr ice, the nicely named igloo, it was actually more appropriate than you could imagine as it was slightly chilly outside.

On getting up she felt a little dizzy and staggered to the front door where her mum was waiting to pick her up. Her mum asked her if she was ok and asked if she had been drinking, "of course not" was the reply, as usual. About 100 metres down the road the girl was violently sick inside her mothers car and continued to be all night at home.

Since that day the girl has never been able to drink a glass of taboo again, indeed even the smell of it in bars makes her start to heave. That was
the girl's only experience of the drink Taboo.

That was actually a true story, as if you didn't guess. Taboo is a fabulously easy drink to have, it is sweet and fruity and is great for those who don't like heavily alcoholic drinks. However, the moral of this story, as with all my drunken tales is to drink in moderation or prepare for the consequences and also that buying and drinking alcohol under the age of 18 is illegal.

This was a favourite drink of mine during my college years, but due to just a slight overkill, I can't face the stuff anymore :o)
