There's a product you can buy in the States called 'Liquid Smoke'. I understand that people like to add it to their home-made barbecue sauces and marinades and so on, to give them a little bit of authentic barbecue-flavoured 'kick'. As far as I'm aware it's a synthetic product that's been made to taste like burning wood smoke. Bearing in mind I have only read about 'Liquid Smoke' in recipe books and so on, but have never encountered it in real life, I think that after consuming my first glass of Talisker whiskey the other night, I have an EXCELLENT idea of exactly what it tastes like. On the shores of Loch Harport, the village of Carbost is home to Skye's only distillery producing a wonderfully powerful and award-winning Island malt bottled at above average strength. I once visited this distillery on a cold febuary afternoon, we were all hoping for a wee dram to warm us up, it was closed!!!! Anyway, what's it like? Well colour first of all: Tends to be Golden Amber, to light golden bronze. Taste and smell wise: Vanilla, honey, fermenting apple. Light peat, sea salt, peppery sweet.
