Advantages: Subtle flavors and a fantastic finish
Disadvantages: Not peaty enough for my liking
On the shores of Loch Harport, the village of Carbost is home to Skye's only distillery producing a wonderfully powerful and award-winning Island malt bottled at above average strength. I once visited this distillery on a cold febuary afternoon, we were all hoping for a wee dram to warm us up, it was closed!!!!
Anyway, what's it like? Well colour first of all: Tends to be Golden Amber, to light golden bronze.
Taste and smell wise: Vanilla, honey, fermenting apple. Light peat, sea salt, peppery sweet. Slightly smokey and even a tiny bit spicey. Hints of Oak I would say in there.
After is hits you leaves a pleasing finish. The peppery finish this whisky is (in)famous for. A long burn that starts like a screaming siren from the distance, speeding into your mouth it fills your senses with fire. Eventually it fades to a faint prickle that will stay for several minutes unless you douse it with water, or another sip, I recoomend another sip!
This is another smooth whisky, very easy to drink, and is good as an all rounder. Many people rate this as the finest Scotch Whisky, while I would not go along with that myself I would agree that it is up there with the best!
Value wise its not bad either, you can generally pick up a bottle of the ten year for around £26, again if you shop around this is a whisky that can be on offer and if your lucky you can pick it up for closer to £20, which is real bargain.
If you fancy tring something a bit different, Talisker also do 18 and 25 year old bottles. Have not tried these but from what I hear they are excellent.
Overall a very nice whisky. This was the first single malt I ever tried and it really got me into them. If you like a very subtle hint of peat, this is the whisky for you!
Summary: All round excellent whisky and good value!

- 27/05/09 Can't stand the stuff despite repeated tries (whiskey in general, not just Talisker). You do a good job describing them - hopefully not all done in one sitting as this may have compromised your judgment LOL. 8^) |
