I don't buy fruit juice on a regular basis as my children are happy to drink water and as this is better for their teeth I am very happy! However there are times when I buy a carton of juice just to ring the changes. Recently I have been experimenting with products from the Tesco value range with varying results.
Tesco value apple juice comes in a plain looking carton that really wouldn't win any beauty prizes. However Tesco have recently improved the value range packaging from that horrendous blue and white stripes affair to something a bit more pleasing. In the case of this apple juice we now have a picture of a few cup apples on the front of the carton. There is no handy plastic lip to help you pour as with some of the more expensive brands, so you will need to use scissors to cut the carton open. There is a dotted line to help show you where to cut!
The juice itself looks like any other thin apple juice. I have to say I much prefer cloudy apple juice such as that made by Coppella. However this juice looks fine and is a good amber colour. The juice does have the smell of apples so full marks here too! Next for the all important taste test. I was very pleasantly surprised by the taste. This juice has a fairly sweet taste but not overly so. In fact I prefer it to the slightly sweeter taste of Tesco's higher priced apple juice. My children liked it too and said they couldn't taste any difference between this juice and the higher priced brands we usually buy.
On looking at the nutritional information I see that this juice is made from 100% apple juice from concentrate. A serving will give you 110 calories although the carton doesn't tell me how much a serving actually is! I have looked on the Tesco web site to compare this value juice with the higher priced Tesco apple juice. Both are made from 100% apple juice but the higher priced juice has slightly more calories per serving.
Tesco value apple juice is of course, only available from Tesco. A 1 litre carton costs 56p as opposed to 86p for 1 litre of Tesco regular apple juice. I would highly recommend this apple juice; I would be surprised if any one could tell the difference between the value juice and other brands!
