Being a fan of fizzy 'pop' style drinks, I am aware of the potential damage said drinks can do to my tooth enamel and because I am conscious of this, I have recently been making a bit of an effort to try and drink healthier alternatives... Anything that prevents me from needing a filling at the dentist's is well worth a try in my book!
As a result of my new found 'tooth guilt', I have tried various fruit juices and flavoured waters. Having found that none in particular have tickled my taste buds quite as much as a fizzy alternative might, I decided to try out some alternatives when shopping in my recent Tesco supermarket.
Looking along the row of flavoured waters and 'high juice' type drinks, I eventually decided to try a few offerings from the Tesco own-branded range of fruit 'squash' style drinks. I get bored easily so I thought I would select a few from the range so that it would offer me a bit of choice. I was very keen on the 'No added Sugar' range of squashes in Tesco, as this would obviously benefit my dental issues even more!
One of the squash drinks that has certainly proved to be a hit in our household is the 'Cherries & Berries' squash. I think this is mostly because the taste is quite different from other drinks we have tried, certainly in terms of squash-style drinks. I think these drinks can quite easily become boring, particularly in terms of the flavours available. It seems to be very much a case of 'lemon, orange or blackcurrant' when choosing one of these types of drinks, in smaller supermarkets and stores anyway!
The Cherries and Berries squash is double concentrated, thus meaning the bottle is quite small when compared to alternative brands. This is in no way a negative point for me, particularly when we are walking home from the supermarket instead of catching the bus! The smaller size of the bottle of course means it is a little lighter and therefore easier to transport. The double concentrated element to this squash of course means that only half the usual amount needs to be used to achieve the same strength/taste as usual.
The colour of the squash is a kind of reddish-burgundy, but this pales once you have diluted the juice in your glass. The smell, once poured from the bottle, is very sweet and very fruity but I do find that the overall scent is really quite appetising.
Upon taking a mouthful, I am in no doubt that the juice is very sweet. The first taste that hits my little taste buds is cherry. Not in a strong, overpowering way like the taste of cherry-cola or something similar though. It is definitely more subtle-tasting in this squash but it is evident nevertheless.
The other tastes are more difficult to pick out individually but I do get a hint of something akin to raspberry. I do find that the other taste element to this squash is probably a combination of several tastes mixed in together, but this in no way puts me off or makes the drink any less enjoyable.
I would point out that this drink is very sweet but in no way is it too 'false' tasting or sickly. I don't find that the drink is over-powering at all, even when I have poured in quite a lot of the squash concentrate.
I do find that when diluted, the squash makes a refreshing drink and quenches my thirst quite nicely. I am not a very big water drinker, but feel that I am obtaining some of my recommended daily amount of water if I have a couple of glasses of this during the daytime.
I am quite converted to drinking this squash and the other flavours I purchased at the same time are quite dull in comparison and remain ignored for the most part. I will continue to buy the cherries & berries squash and will continue to enjoy it for a long time to come, I'm sure.
The label on the little bottle - which is 750ml in size - informs me that 100ml of this squash will provide me with 21 calories and only a trace of fat.
There is also information informing me that the squash contains no artificial colours or flavours and I can see quite clearly that this product is suitable for vegetarians. There is also allergy advice given, as well as advice for anybody who wants to give this drink to toddlers.
The squash is obviously only available from Tesco stores, and costs around 80p for this 750ml bottle.
All in all I would highly recommend this squash. We cannot get enough of it in our household and I will continue to buy it regularly. This squash gets top marks from me!
Summary: A 'Berry' nice Cherry drink!
