Advantages: refreshingly different, quite pleasant, cheap.....and thats all she wrote.

Disadvantages: doesn't stay fizzy for very long at all...

This is a review for Tesco Diet Cola but with a difference- because this is a review of Tesco Diet Cola with a hint of almond! Why am I not writing it in it's own heading- well, simply because I can find neither a product listing or photo for this product though it is displayed quite prominently on the shelf in my local branch!

My wife is ver fussy and will drink only Coca Cola with no exceptions but like to find myself more open-minded with my tastes. I love Coke's varied flavours that they do- both black cherry and lime are exceptionally different- though I am, not so keen on the price so, seeing this for forty-something pence, thought it was well worth a bash! It is different from the usual bottle in that this variety has a yellow label as opposed to the usual grey!

First impressions are thus: this is not as gassy as other colas and goes flat in the glass very quickly and lasts not that much longer in an opened bottle. The Cola itself is very sweet but not to the point of sickliness and a taste familiar to anyone who has tried any of the supermarket branded cola's all across the board. The almond flavouring, sounding very odd until you have actually tried it, comes in almost as an after-taste and is quite a pleasant experience. This, too, is not strong enough to make the taste overpowering and gives the cola a very unique and original flavour. I am not convinced I would drink it all the time but it is nice for a change and I actually like that it less gassy though I wish it stayed carbonated for longer. I actually find Coca-cola far too gassy for my liking and though I am missing that caffeine hit that you get with the main brand here, this is almost preferable. I like too that is nowhere near as sickly as say Pepsi, which often tastes so sweet that it is almost like drinking syrup without the thick consistency. Swapping to Pepsi Max has never been an option because I am averse to drinking sweeteners which are continously getting a bad press. Of course I am not niave enough not to realise that this product also contains sweeteners as opposed to real sugar but, in my head, I have convinced myself that by buying a cheaper product there will be less harmful additives than in the bigger brands. No doubt I am wrong but hey-ho. No one ever said your inner arguments had to make any sense!

The ingredients state that the product is gluten-free, contains no nuts (something which is harder and harder to find in products nowadays as it feels as though every item you buy now feels the need to state that this product was produced in the same country as a speck of nut might be found) and apparently no artifical flavours or colours. But quite contradictairly there is also a small warning that the ingredients cannot be guaranteed nut-free despite the two previous statements on the label that no nuts are produced in the factory or that there are any in the recipe itself!
Now I know that companies are advised to exhibit total disclosure and are simply watching their own backs but honestly, I do think sometimes they can take things too far! Either a product is nut-free or it isn't, what is it to be?

I'm going to sum up now because there is a real danger of me starting to waffle but overall, my thoughts about this product are good. Onre thing is evident though and that is that you get what you pay for and this is NOT a high-end quality product but is satisfactory for a cheaper own-brand Cola that attempts to stand out from it's contemporaries! I'm still just trying to work out how it can have a hint of almond without any trace of almonds in the ingredients but I think I may be pondering this for some time to come so I had better leave you now.....

Summary: An almond cola drink that doesn't contain any nuts- how do you like the size of them apples?

NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. I had this round a mate's house and I thought it was rank! There are some things you can scrimp on and some things you can't and this, in my opinion, is one of them. Nicely written review, as always.
