Advantages: Nice taste, thirst quenching, good value.
Disadvantages: None, unless you don't like lemon squash!
---Intro---
I decided that it would be a good idea to review the varieties of Tesco No Added Sugar Squashes, since I drink them so often, and 4 bottles can usually be found in our kitchen. While Diet Coke is my favourite drink, it's not practical to be drinking this constantly - the amount it would cost, possible health issues, excessive burping - need I say more?!
Having reviewed the Tropical flavour, I am now moving onto Lemon. Traditionally lemon squash has been my favourite of squashes - even as the world's fussiest eater as a child lemon squash was one of the few things that I enjoyed, and have enjoyed consistently throughout my life so far.
Even better still though, this particular lemon squash has no added sugar, which is very good since I'm already overweight so don't need any extra unnecessary calories!
---The Bottle---
The bottle contains 750ml. As noted in my previous squash review, I should note again (word for word) that the Tesco bottles of squash have double the concentrate, so the bottles are a lot smaller than they used to be. However, the squash goes further, so technically you get more in the 750ml bottle than you did in the previous litre bottles! It is supposedly meant to be more environmentally friendly perhaps, but I would imagine that they could make the squash even more concentrated! The bottle is made of 100% recyclable PET whatever that might be. The bottle is also easier to fit in cupboards, being smaller!
The label is blue and has a picture of lemons on it - because it's lemon squash.
---What's in it---
As expected the main ingredient is water, followed by Comminuted Lemon from Concentrate (20%), Citric Acid, Acidity Regulator (Sodium Citrate), Malic Acid, Sweeteners (Aspartame, Sodium Saccharin), Natural Flavourings, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Metabisulphite), Stabiliser (Carboxymethylcellulose). Yeah yeah, I know there's no need really to list all ingredients, but if I don't someone will probably ask me whether a certain type of flavouring is included!
For those with allergies it contains sulphites, a source of phenylalanine and can't guarantee nut free.
There are just 4 calories in a 250ml serving, but then I suppose there's just over twice that in the pint I'm about to have - but nothing too excessive!
---The Drinking Experience---
I sometimes remember to shake the bottle, sometimes I don't. Then officially you're meant to pour into a glass with one part squash to 9 parts water (remember it's double strength). Obviously though this does depend on personal taste, and less squash, more water will be needed for small children.
It's been a long day, and I'm gasping for a drink. I have my pint of lemon squash, so here goes.....
The smell is fairly pleasant, just like lemon squash really. The squash tastes much like any lemon squash - practically impossible to describe if you've never tasted lemon squash...and quite honestly if you've never tasted lemon squash I'm not really sure where you've been. I should perhaps say that lemon squash doesn't really seem to bear any resemblance to sucking the juice out of a lemon (something which I love doing...mmmm, lemon), the taste is slightly lemony but quite mild really. Like most lemon squashes there is a slight bitter aftertaste. I have found some lemon squashes (those with added sugar) far too sweet, but I find that this one is just right, and it's good to know that I'm not rotting my teeth in the process.
---Other---
The drink isn't meant to be frozen, but ice lollies can be made from it (from personal experience anyway).
Tesco no added sugar squashes currently cost 80p. I'm not sure how long a bottle lasts really since we have such a variety, but it is good value for money.
What I like to do for a change is use half lemon and half lime squash, and make a lemon and lime squash. Just adds variety to the drinks available in our kitchen. And you'll be pleased to hear that my next squash review will be for Tesco No Added Sugar Lime Squash!
Summary: If you like lemon squash, get this!
