Advantages: fizzy, cheap, not too sweet

Disadvantages: slightly acidic

As a crucial part in many summer drinks, and rather refreshing on its own, lemonade can almost always be found in our fridge from around April to October. As a result, I like to be able to get it as cheaply as possible, particularly when it is being used as a mixer in something like Pimms, and thus I discovered Tesco's diet lemonade, priced at 36p per 2 litre bottle.

This can be found in almost any Tesco, in the same aisle as all the other fizzy drinks, and while they provide an alternative "value" option, at 13p a bottle, this is the cheapest diet lemonade that they sell.

The drink itself is very, very fizzy when opened, and I'd advise leaving it for a couple of hours after bringing your shopping home before opening. If you can't wait that long, go careful when opening. It doesn't taste as lemony as a lot of branded lemonades, and for this reason, I don't particularly rate it for a stand alone drink. However, as a mixer, you'd be hard pushed to tell it apart from something like schepps or 7up. Also, unlike many cheap diet products, it doesn't taste too artificially sweet, which is a huge plus in my mind, although, when drunk alone, the after taste can be ever so slightly acidic.

Nutritionally, it is much the same as every other diet lemonade, 2.1kcal per 250ml, and the usual list of ingredients.

One major plus is that so long as you do the bottle up tightly, it stays fizzy easily as long as the branded products, if not a bit longer.

Overall, I will keep buying this product, as as a mixer it is more than adequate. However, now that 7up is so often on offer at under £1, I will opt for that when I'm planning to drink the lemonade as lemonade.

Summary: much better than unbranded cola, but better as a mixer

Dare I ask what sweeteners are in the drink?
