Like most people these days we are cutting costs where we can and recently have been buying Sun Sip squash from Tesco who sell it as part of their discount range. The apple and blackcurrant double concentrated squash costs just 99p for a 1.5 litre bottle, as its doubled concentrated this gives you 3 litres of squash for under a pound.
The Sun sip squash is sold in a squareish clear plastic bottle with a regular screw top lid. It has a plastic label around it which shows on the front a picture of the fruit, blackcurrants and apples and also tells the customer that this is sugar free, ideal for me being diabetic and also for anyone counting calories, a serving of this being just 4 calories. The label also has the Sun sip logo on it and has the words double concentrated in large letters across the middle of it.
The sides of the label give all the regular information you would expect to find including instructions for use and nutritional values.
To make a drink of this you only need to use a very small amount of squash with it being double concentrated so careful pouring is required or it will get wasted, I'm not personally a fan of these drinks being double concentrated but it seems to be the trend now. On undoing the lid the drink smells sweet and fruity, not overly like blackcurrant or apple but it smells pleasant.
Sun sip apple and blackcurrant makes a very nice drink, its refreshing on a hot day and equally nice made with hot water, something that I do with any flavour squash. The only downside to this drink is that it doesn't really taste of apple or blackcurrant, its more what I would describe as just fruity. Its a nice drink and leaves no nasty aftertaste but if you are looking for a definite blackcurrant and apple flavour then this wont provide it.
Over all I would recommend the sun sip blackcurrant and apple sugar free squash, it tastes very nice and has a nice fruity flavour but if its a rybena style drink you are after then this definitely isn't for you, having said that though its a very good price and makes a nice glass of squash to accompany a meal or snack or just to quench your thirst. We will definitely continue to use it.
As I sit here drinking a glass of this apple and blackcurrant flavour drink, I am just thinking it tastes a little like drinking confusion! You see, I'm not too sure what it is this tastes like. The overriding taste certainly isn't apple, and it isn't distinctive blackcurrant either. That's not to say it is terrible, it isn't, it is just an average sort of random fruity flavour - it could be called summer fruits or wild berry or any other name you see splashed across the mish-mash fruit squash flavours. This is odd as apple and blackcurrant are the only fruits listed on the ingredients...
The drink is certainly cheap, costing less than a £1 for 2L, but given the above, I cannot tell whether this translates to value or not... If someone offered me a steak burger for £2 I would think that was fantastic, but if when I ate it, I couldn't even tell I was eating a 'beef' burger, even if was pleasant enough, then my opinion would drop.
I have no doubt this bottle will last me ages - indeed I have only had about 4 glasses of it since I bought it around a month ago, so that is probably an indicator that this is a two star rather than three star product.
Overall, I wouldn't strongly advise people not to get this, but I would just Tippex out the label and let people make their own mind up!
Sun-Sip is another new brand which Tesco are currently selling and advertising as their Discount Brand. As I have had a lot of success with all other discount brand products I decided to give this one a go.
The juice comes in a clear plastic bottle which has a standard screw cap top. The middle of the bottle has a purple label which has a picture of an apple and some blackcurrant one and the product name and of course the Tesco Discount Brand logo. The sides and back of the label contain all of the info about the juice including ingredient, directions for use and warnings.
~~USE TASTE AND RESULTS~~
On opening the bottle I was instantly able to smell the juice. For me the smell of blackcurrants was the first thing I could smell but after a few minutes I was actually able to smell the faint waft of apples. The juice is a dark purple colour so is easy to see and monitor how much you are pouring into a glass. The recommended amount is one part juice to 4 parts water but for me I usually use slightly more water as I don't like my boys having strong juice. The colour does get slightly lighter as the water is added.
When I first tasted this the only flavour I was able to taste was the blackcurrant and this is still the case. I was pleased with how nice this tasted and did not find it was overly sweet. I did not get any unpleasant aftertaste from this juice as I have with other cheaper brands. My boys also drink this juice and love it. They enjoy the fresh taste which they get from it.
One thing I would recommend this that the bottle is shaken before using it as there can occasionally be a slight purple film around the top of the juice in the bottle but this is easily removed by giving it a good shake. I also recommend you open this over the sink or draining board if you have light work tops as if the undiluted juice comes into contact with the worktop and is not instantly cleaned up then it will stain.
This juice does not have any added sugar which is a bonus for me as it means it is slightly healthier for my boys to drink. The ingredient for the juice are:-
Water, apple juice from concentrate (8%), Blackcurrant juice from concentrate (2%), citric acid, acidity regulator (sodium citrates), Flavouring, Natural colours (anthocyanins), preservatives (potassium sorbate, sodium met bisulphate) sweeteners (Aspartame, Sodium, saccharin)
The nutritional values for a 100ml serving of this juice are:-
Energy - 7.4KCal
Protein - 0.1g
Carbohydrate - 1.0g
Of which sugars - 1.0g
Fat - trace
Of which saturates - trace
Fibre - trace
Sodium - 0.1g
Salt - 0.3g
Once this juice has been opened then it is recommend that it is stored in a cool dry place and out of direct sunlight. There is no information as to allergy advise and no details as to whether this was produced in a nut free factory.
The bottle is 100% recyclable, in my house this usually means turning it into a rocket or something similar and then only after they have finished making with it will it find its way to the recycling bin!
~~PRICE AND AVAILABILITY~~
As this is a Tesco's Discount Brand product then it is only available in Tesco stores and comes in a 2 litre bottle which lasts me a good week and costs just 82p. I think this is a great price as leading brands which are half the size are over a pound more to buy.
After using this brand now for a good few months then I can honestly say that it is great. I am still unable to detect the apple flavour in it but maybe this is just me as my boys say that they can. The price is excellent and the bottle does last for a good amount of time. I would advise you to try this and save yourself some money!
