Advantages: Tastes nice, cheap, low in calories
Disadvantages: Flavourings, preservatives, etc, the usual!
Can you guys picture in your mind what cloudy, traditional lemonade tastes like? You know, the one that actually tastes of lemon and not of sugary fizz like a lot of lemonades do? You can? Good. Now, take away the fizz to leave it completely flat, and add a bit more of a tart, lemon flavour. Have you grabbed it? Right, well, that's what this squash tastes like.
I must admit, I am partial to a bit of traditional lemonade, but have always found lemon squash to seem a bit too overbearing, either on the sweet front or on the tart nature it can sometimes have. Tesco Value Lemon squash has managed to provide a drink that I like very much. I wasn't a fan of the blackcurrant squash in this range, as it stinks of colourings and flavourings and stains, whilst giving you a weak flavoured squash, despite its double concentrate. This lemon squash, however, is on the other end of the scale with the taste factor, although you do still have the flavourings, colourings and preservatives, etc.
As a result, it's not so great if you have children who are susceptible to such things making them hyperactive. I am, and I know my son is, so we only have this in moderation, and we both quite like it. I have to say, too much is a bit sickly, so I'd probably only have one or maybe two a day, whereas with other squashes I may have a bit more. The lemon taste is lovely at first, but too much can put you off.
The drink also boasts low calories, for all of you watching your calorific intake out there. You get 3 calories per serving, and the drink is also suitable for vegetarians. Granted, you're not going to be drinking much in the way of lemons, as it's all going to be flavoured, but we wouldn't be buying this if that's what we wanted, would we? The drink costs a mere 53p, and you get a litre and a half. It's double concentrated, meaning you need to use half as much as other squashes to get the same strength. I don't completely agree with this, but then I do sometimes like it strong. If you follow their recommendations, you'll get 60 glasses of squash out of it, so, at under a penny for a glass of squash, it ain't half bad!
Summary: A value squash that tastes nice

- 12/05/09 Whenever I think of lemon squash I think of stuff like this; too much concentrate and I end up wheezing like Muttley laughing (the dog from Dastardly & Muttley/The Wacky Races.) Healthier option would be the Kenwood recipe version - actual lemons whizzed up in a lemon with sugar and water but I don't think it would be low cal after that! |

- 05/05/09 I quite like this too, although I do opt for the Robinsons version usually. |
