Advantages: Price and taste

Disadvantages: Unattractive packaging

Tesco Value Orange Juice has been the breakfast juice of choice in our home for a number of years now, probably based mainly on its price; it is consistently lower than the other available choices. Not a pure orange juice in the true sense but "made from concentrate which is the case for most juices in the supermarkets unless you are prepared to pay a premium price for a premium product. Our consistent commitment to this product must indicate that we see some merit in it.

Taste has got to be a major factor and this value orange passes the test; not that it is the most wonderful orange I've ever tasted but, to be honest, most of those I would give a top rating for taste would cost two to three times more. This Tesco stuff is OK, it does have hints of the added water which is only natural if it's made from concentrate; water has to be added. However it does have a decent orangey taste with no unpleasant aftertaste prevalent in some other products I've tried. It's a flavour I have not grown tired of so it must be good. It is a smooth drink with none of the bits (I don't mind bits but I know it's important to some).

Colour is fine too, looks reasonably natural. It comes in a one litre carton of the old variety by that I mean it's the one you have to lift up and tear to allow you to pour; none of the integrated plastic re-sealable pourers that you get with most brand s these days. So you have to decant it into, preferably a container that you can put into your fridge door. I have no problem with this if it keeps the price down so be it!

Tesco's packaging for their value range lacks appeal. Its just bland and ordinary but, again, perhaps it's another in keeping the price down.

Summary: A value product for price and taste
