Advantages: Cheap, taste not too bad
Disadvantages: Cheap and podery tasting and too sour for me!
Me, well I do try to follow a healthy diet (honest I really do lol). For anyone who regularly reads my reviews this could cause some confusion as I am a major fan of junk food (please read my reviews on this), however that is only some of the time and not all of it and I do try to incorporate healthy living into my life as much as possible and I am a huge fitness fan. So although I am a junk food lover, I'm a size 8 and relatively healthy! (I do have to work hard though to be fair lol).
One thing I always have is a 'sensible' breakfast. I believe it really is the most important meal of the day and I eat cereal and fruit and and things like that and so a couple of weeks ago I decided to give probiotic drinks a go as well and to see how they faired. Promising to help with my digestive system and being full of friendly bacteria I've always wanted to get into them however when I saw the prices of these little drinks by leading brands I've often stopped myself from purchasing them as they are a rather expensive habit in the long run I think but when I saw these Tesco 'Value' one's priced at a mere 49p for 4 botttles I was intrigued to give them a go as I've heard women in particular say they really help with bloating and I do get that as I'm a fan of anything fizzy.
The Packaging:
The bottles are small, white and plastic with white screw on/lids to the top of them and they have a slight curve to the middle of the bottle for ease of handling. On each one in red, white and navy writing I'm told they are Tesco Value Probiotic Strawberry Yogurt Drink With L.acidophilus LA-% and that they help to maintain a healthy digestive system and that they are low in fat and there is a scribble of a strawberry in there. Over the bottles there is a light cardboard sleeve and the front and the back of it are the same and I'm told the same information as is on each bottle and I'm also told they are Vegetarian, there is an at a glance nutritional chart on there and the size is stated (4x100g) and there is a photograph of strawberries on there too. Other information on the bottom of the sleeve includes being told a bit about the product, ingredients and allergy advice is given, a full nutritional chart is listed and contact details for Tesco are given. It all looks economy packaging but it's all informative enough and at least the bottles are rather plain in appearance so no one will see your drinking these cheap alternatives lol.
A Bit About The Product According To The Bottom Of The Sleeve:
The L.acidophilus LA-5 in Tesco Value Probiotic Drinks can help preserve a positive balance of friendly bacteria in the digestive system. This beneficial effects helps maintain a healthy digestive system as part of a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet.
Me And The Drink:
Well the drink is very much like a runny yogurt in appearance though it isn't like water and does have a little 'body' to it. Light pink in colour with a bit of a creamy, glossy look to it, it's smooth with no bits in it and has a nice smell of stawberries to it and all round appears and smells good.
Taste wise, well it's ok but nothing wonderful. It tastes of stawberries but to me it tastes chalky and powdery in it's taste and it leaves me feeling really thirsty after consuming it cos it's also rather sour. I guess really to me it tastes a little on the cheap side which it is really, I just couldn't call this delicious (but at the same time to be fair it isn't foul) and really isn't terrible. Bottom line is it's just too sour for me!
Does It Work?:
I haven't felt any ill effects drinking these however I haven't felt any better in my general health either. Do I think they work? Well I don't know if any probiotics work to be fair and I know my Mum drinks them every day and has done for years now and when asked the question what do they do for you she was hard pressed to pin point any good, positive points at all really apart from saying in their defence she believes they work lol.
I think if you regularly drink this type of drink these are worth a go basically. They are not foul and they are an economical but but for me they simply don't taste nice enough and are a tad too artificially sweet for my liking and certainly too sour and after drinking them I can't seem to shift the after-taste for ages!
