Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: no taste, dust filled
I drink a lot of tea and so I like to buy teabags with a good taste. I have tried cheap supermarket own brand ones before and I thought I couldn't possibly buy any worse than Asda Pricewise ones. I was wrong. Tesco value teabags are very weak and you honestly would never know you were drinking tea unless someone told you so.
The problem is that these teabags are filled with tea dust and the other bits that are left over after the decent stuff has been processed. If you shake these teabags, or look into the bottom of the box you will see the dust.
It is impossible to get a decent cup of tea with one of these and even with two it is still not good. The tea is kind of 'dusty' tasting and doesn't have the fragrance you get with a good brand. Leaving the bag in the cup to make the tea stronger doesn't work either. It stews and tastes horrible.
I really think that these are a false economy and it makes more sense to buy good teabags like Tetley, Typhoo, or Yorkshire Tea which will make a pot full of full strength tea with just two bags.
However, if you are not really tea drinker but you keep it in the cupboard just in case you have a visitor who prefers it, or you fancy the odd cup, these might be worth buying. It also depends how you drink your tea. I like mine strong with just a little milk, so these teabags are no good for me. I know people who drink it very milky and weak with lots of sugar so the taste of the tea is not important.
So, like everything else, its horses for courses. Personally, no thanks, these are horrible and looking at the dusty stuff in the bottom of the cup is revolting.
Summary: Not for seasoned tea drinkers

- 05/10/09 I agree, sometimes I reckon there's a tea bags worth of dust loose in the box. Cheap and not cheerful tat. |
