Advantages: Cheap, decent enough for cooking
Disadvantages: Tastes horrible and feels damaging
I've often wondered why some brands are more expensive than others when it comes to certain spirits, but after having tried the Tesco Value Vodka, I'd much rather pay nearly twice as much and get a much better product.
The distillation process of making vodka is often what determines the quality, from the source of the starch to the quality of the charcoal used to finish it off. I don't pretend to know exactly how Tesco do manage to be able to sell their vodka so cheaply, but I suppose like all other things Value, you're likely to suffer somewhere with quality, and here, it's definitely the flavour.
Vodka does have a rather distinctive if very plain taste. It often tastes of nothing, and that is its distinction! Just an alcoholic aftertaste. However, the Tesco Value Vodka leaves a rather unpleasant feel after drinking, even if you add it with a mixture such as Coca Cola or lemonade. Many people get TV Vodka if they're planning on making a cocktail or mixing it with a number of ingredients, or even if they need vodka for cooking, where the flavour isn't going to be one of the main ones.
Sadly, Tesco Value vodka is one of those Value products thatg doesn't really come up to scratch. It's a cheap way to get drunk, but it leaves you with a rather empty feeling in the stomach, like it's banging down the lining with its chemicals. It's definitely not one for me, although I have had a few bottles here and there. No longer, though. Vodka's not my usual tipple, but if I do have it at all, it won't be this brand.
Summary: Not such a good Value product from Tesco

- 25/04/09 The older I get, the more I realise if you want a decent vodka, you have to pay for it. |
