Advantages: Saves my mate a fortune for marinating chicken in vodka
Disadvantages: Tastes too harsh
My mate does a wicked recipe that involves marinating chicken strips in a vodka and red wine mix. It's a yummy dish but the marinating takes up nearly half a bottle of vodka and then it just goes down the sink after which is a wicked waste in my opinion! lol Vodka is getting proper dear at the minute so one weekend she brought a bottle of Tesco Value Vodka for her recipe because the chicken isn't actually cooked in the vodka so she thought a cheapo meths type one would be ok.
It cost about £7.00 for a 70cl bottle and that's loads cheaper than Smirnoff or Absolut. After we'd pee'd ourselves laughing at the manky Value bottle she poured some out to marinate the chicken in and we decided to have a glass to see what it was like.
I had mine with coke, loads of coke! lol It's a harsh drink and there's no smoothness in the flavour, it also tastes very synthetic and like there's a load of chemicals in it. It's not actually as bad as I thought it would be but it tastes like £7.00 vodka would taste and is very bad quality and not something I'd choose to drink. My mate usually drinks her vodka neat over ice but she didn't dare do that with this one and had it with less coke than me, she ended up topping the coke up because the vodka's sour and it made her pull her face every time she had a sip.
It's dead flat as well, by that I mean there's no depth in the flavour of this vodka and every mouthful just tasted of the same mix of chemicals as well as the sweeter coke. And whoever said vodka hasn't got a smell has obviously never sniffed this from the bottle, it just smells of raw alcohol and made me heave a bit!
I couldn't taste any difference in the recipe, if anything it improved it because the flavour of the red wine came through more using this cheaper and blander vodka. I'd say it was more successful for cooking but I don't know if I'd recommend it for food that has actually got to be cooked in the vodka in case the harsh flavour of it messed the food up.
I know I'll never drink it again though, but I can see why it's so popular with the wreck heads round here because of the madly cheap price of such a strong drink. For me though it's loads too harsh and even after the 1 glass I had I felt a bit queasy and had a proper weird taste in my mouth, I just have higher standards when it comes to booze than Tesco Value!
Summary: I'd Rather Pay For A Bottle Of Smirnoff!
