... those ales that if you like and walk into a pub thinking you want another ale and then you see out of the corner of you eye they have OLD P you soon make up your mind that you will be drinking it for the rest of the evening. This is another of one of those beers that is better on tap than from the bottle but don't let that put you off because it's still a great drink. In my opinion it's not really a summer afternoon drink it's more of evening ale. If you look around in supermarkets then sometimes you can pick up some g...more

Although I like to try new beers and sample things from new breweries there are also beers that I view as classics and will always try again and again. One of these classics is Theakstons Old Peculier ~ a strong yet tasty brew from the Theakston Brewery. ~~~THE BREWERY. There can't be many people who haven't heard of Theakstons Brewery. It can be found in Masham, North Yorkshire (the same place that now houses the Black Sheep Brewery) and began life as a brew pub (in the old Black Bull pub), back in 1827. They moved production to the present site in the 1870s ~ throughout the years they have expanded, bought a number of tied pubs and now ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Not Quite Brain Theft But Quite Possibly One Day (1135 words)

It had been a loooong weekend and I needed a drink. Having spent the last forty-eight hours looking at an ancient pile of rocks, sleeping in a bed that was too small and getting a parking ticket in Southampton (review to follow upon request!), I desperately needed a drink. Having sampled some of the local beer delights of Wiltshire (Wadworth's 6X, no less), I decided I was in the mood for a nice, tasty ale and so I opted for a rather attractive brown-bottle of Theakston’s Old Peculier. Incidentally, this is a beer that always brings to mind those teenage years of going out every night and discovering the vagaries of different versions of alcoholic brews. The two most ...  Read the complete review

First of all, the short description is completely wrong! This is a DARK beer at 5.6% ABV - whoever writes them doesn't know beer !!!! Well, it too only 10 mins today after coming in from work and already I was writing an op on some bottled beer. That tells you what kind of day I?ve had at work. Horrendous pressure today. If you want to know why I?ve wrote ops on 2 of the 3 aspects of my job ? take the worst possible scenarios of all 3, put them together, give it a shake so its all mixed up, and pour. Hey presto, that was today!!! (The 3rd is Trade Union Rep, but there's no catagory for that - when it comes, so will the op!!!) Anyway the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Nothing peculiar about peculier (385 words)

Let's be clear from the start, this is not a session beer! It is actually 5.6% abv and occasionally 5.7% on draught. I have been drinking Old Peculier at my local in Harrogate (North Yorkshire) - the Tap and Spile which is a regular haunt of Simon Theakston himself. It is a dark almost stout looking ale but is not as heavy as a stout. It has a very deep caramel taste and everyone that tries their first sip always say 'ooh that's dangerously nice'. Simon Theakston invited a group of us to visit his brewery in Masham (nr Ripon) and it was one of the most enjoyable nights I have had in years. He personally gave us a tour of the facilities as well as plying us with ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Theakstons Old Peculier: Strong ale (499 words)

My hubbie has always been a beer drinker, he’s loves the bottles of real ale and often buys them if we’re staying in and watching a D.V.D. When we go up north to visit family he usually stocks up with bottles of Theakston Old Peculier as for some reason it’s cheaper up there than down south. The brew is made in Yorkshire by T&R Theakston Ltd which probably has something to do with the price up north compared to the one down south, but every now and again you can find them on offer at the supermarket. This is when my hubbie stocks up, as if your buying them on offer at five bottles for £6 then it’s cheaper than the usual price of £1.75 a 500ml ...  Read the complete review
