Advantages: Exotic, a great mixer
Disadvantages: very strong, an acquired taste
I'm not a coffee drinker and so Tia Maria has never been on my favourite drinks list. On its own I've found it a bit too potent and sharp tasting for my liking, although it improves each time I try it. However once somebody suggested mixing it with coke - it's a whole new ball game! It produces an exotic taste that is easy to knock back in multiple quantities. A more recent (and so far less well known) discovery is Tia Maria with orange juice. I warn you - it looks like puke in a glass, but tastes divine. Almost like an alcoholic chocolate orange - but more complicated. Best to have had a few other drinks first to summon up the courage to taste it first though as it really does look disgusting and you'll get a few funny looks from those propping up the bar. It is definitely an acquired taste but one that makes a nice alternative to most of the other sugar sweet spirits available. Definitely worth a purchase!

- 11/06/01 It definitely IS strong. My preference is Tia Maria with just ice, or to hell with work the next day, try it with Vodka too. Vodka takes some of the syrupy sweetness away and gives it more kick too. Not for the faint-hearted. |

- 11/06/01 I've never considered this drink to be very strong and always likeed the taste of it myself especially with coke. Will have to try it with orange juice as you suggested though :) |
