Advantages: hmmm...its cold when its been in the fridge?
Disadvantages: sugar content, artifical taste
**This is review is based on the 500ml bottle**
Tizer is a sparkling mixed flavour soft drink which I remember from my younger days. I didnt even know if was still available to buy until I saw it recently in Tesco on offer at £1.60 for two 500ml bottles.
Feeling nostalgic and fancying something different I purchased a couple of bottles. The first thing I noticed is that the brand name and packaging seems to have undergone a bit of a revamp, the bottle is still a deep orange but now has swirls of yellow and green and bubbles are illustrated. The "Tizer" logo itself sits in the middle on a white label.
Upon opening the screw top you are met with a sweet sugary smell, not at all unpleasant but slightly artificial, it certainly is fizzy though and you can see bubbles escaping from the top of the bottle.
Tasting the drink you notice immediately a sweet, syrupy sensation on your tastebuds and in your mouth. The flavours are quite hard to describe, but lemon, lime (presumably represented by the yellow and green swirls on the bottle) and orange seem to come through but is masked by the overbearing sweetness. Maybe my tastes have changed over the years but I cant remember Tizer tasting that sweet before.
After only a few sips I ended up putting the top back onto the bottle and putting it back into the fridge, I certainly couldnt manage to drink the whole 500ml in one sitting and when you read the GDA information its a good job really. A 250ml serving will provide:
70 calories
16.5g sugar
No fat, no saturates and only a trace of salt.
That means in the whole 500ml bottle there are 33gs of sugar! representing 36% of your recommended daily allowance just in one bottle of pop.
I know all fizzy drinks contain large amounts of sugar but I do have to say I was very suprised by the amount contained in a single bottle of Tizer, and for this reason alone Im afraid I will not be buying it again.
Ingredients and a "Try me Free" promotion are on Tizers website at www.tizer.co.uk if you want to check it out and the drink itself is manufactured by A.G Barr plc.
2/5 stars from me, too sweet & artificial tasting. Yuk!
** edited to add that the Try me free promo is no longer valid, thanks for pointing this out **
Summary: A taste of the past that should stay in the past.

- 29/10/09 I haven't had a Tizer in years... sadly I won't be trying the "free" promotion either, as despite still being on their website the T&Cs reveal that it closed on 7th July! Poor web maintenance there, people. |
