 ... Karmeliet was introduced in 1997. At the time Antoine Bosteels was reported to explain. "Six years ago we already had the idea of a multiple-grain beer. During about three years we did research into the optimal composition of the beer, in which also a coincidentally found recipe of the Carmelite monastery of Dendermonde played an important part. We found this recipe in the Museum of Local History in Dendermonde. It described a beer with three sorts of grain - wheat, barley and oat - partly crude, partly malted....more

It is possible I suppose, that the tenor of my reviews could leave regular readers of these columns with the impression that I tend to favour native British beers and those from far off lands across the pond - leaving the sampling of nearby foreign brews to more Europhile gustators. Nothing could be further from the truth. The sense of taste is, like all the others, a very subjective one. Reporting the results of the trials of these senses is therefore also subjective. I am well aware that Belgium in particular produces a vast array of brewed material with tastes that range from the superb to the downright 'acquired'!
