Advantages: Rich, citrus flavour
Disadvantages: Probably too sweet to drink it all night long
Triple Sec - Triple Sec is a wonderfully refreshing and versatile drink. Bursting with fresh orange flavours, it can be drunk neat, long with a mixer or even added to coffee or hot chocolate for a warming winter treat.
Triple Sec was originally invented by the French in the early 19th century. I first tried it when visiting my girlfriends parents in France and have been in love with it ever since. On that day it was mixed with champagne and lemonade to create a light, fruity spritzer, which was absolutely gorgeous.
While researching this article, (wandering up and down the booze aisle of Sainsbury's!), I have discovered that the alcohol content of Triple Sec can range from 5-40%. I prefer the stronger varieties as I think it has more of a grown up flavour and is less syrupy than the weaker varieties. The bottle I currently have in my kitchen is the 40% variety and I would thoroughly recommend it.
As I said earlier, Triple Sec is a very versatile drink. I have listed below a few of my favourite Triple Sec drinks, but feel free to experiment and invent your own!
Short - Chocolate Orange (sometimes known as a B52 when Grand Marnier is used instead of Triple Sec)
This layered shooter is easy peasy to make:
1) Pour 15ml of Kahlua into a shot glass.
2) Gently trickle into the glass 15 ml of Irish Cream Liqueur (Baileys) so that it floats on top of the Kahlua.
3) Finish by floating 15ml of Triple Sec on top of the Irish Cream Liqueur.
N.B. You should be left with 3 distinct layers in the glass.
Long - Cranberry and Orange Dream - Simple but delicious in summer
1) Mix 1 part Triple Sec and 1 part vodka in a long glass with ice
2) Add 3 parts orange juice and 2 parts cranberry juice
3) Mix well and enjoy
Posh Spritzer
1) Pour 125ml of champagne or sparkling wine into a long glass
2) Add 25ml of Triple Sec
3) Top up with lemonade and serve!
Hot - Triple Sec Liqueur Coffee
1) Simply add 1 shot of Triple Sec to a cup of hot black coffee
2) Add a drizzle of Tia Maria coffee liqueur
3) Add a dash of single cream, which can be floated on top of the coffee
4) Enjoy!
N.B. Hot Chocolate can be used instead of coffee for those with a sweet tooth
Summary: A perfect drink for an apperitif, in a cocktail or with coffee
