Advantages: An invigorating way to start the day
Disadvantages: Sugary and imporrted.
Tropicana is the world's leading producer of orange juice and is owned by the US drinks company PepsiCo. Tropicana produce a range of different fruit juices and have recently started to sell fruit juice smoothies.
I have been drinking Tropicana juice for a number of years and like most consumers I simply enjoy drinking a healthy glass of fruit juice for breakfast everyday. I am accustomed to drinking the orange juice with juicy bits but as I love the taste of mangos I often buy this for a change. This orange and mango drink is made from pure juice that has been slightly pasteurised in order to extend its shelf life. It therefore lacks the goodness of freshly squeezed fruit, but can still be considered as a healthy option.
This Tropicana juice has a smooth consistency. Because of the added mango puree the juice is slightly thicker than orange juice but not as thick as pure mango juice would be. The juice is not bitter and tangy nor is it too sweet. Although it can be drunk at any time of the day, I always enjoy a glass first thing in the morning. It really is a refreshing and invigorating way to start the day when served cold from the fridge.
According to the manufacturers Tropicana orange and mango juice is healthy and good for you and I would agree that it clearly has health benefits and will contribute to a healthy diet. One 150ml glass of Tropicana grapefruit juice is supposed to equal one of your 5 daily portions of fruit and vegetables - the currently fashionable description of what it means to eat healthily according to so-called 'health and medical experts'. A 250ml glass of juice contains a 75% of your daily vitamin C requirements. It contains no cholesterol, sodium or fat and is supposed to promote healthy blood pressure.
Although this juice is not made from concentrate it is made from a sort of concentrate in that it contains 18% mango puree. This is mixed with the 82% orange juice. Importantly though there is no added water or sugar. It does contain a lot of natural fruit sugar though and at 19g per 200ml serving you will be consuming a fifth of your daily maximum of sugar in one glass.
There are a number of other drawbacks to consider before you buy this juice. The cartons are not the easiest packaging to recycle and may councils do not have facilities for recycling Tropical juice cartons. It is also important to note that the juice is not organic and is probably imported from the USA. So it is not the most environmentally friendly juice you can buy.
Tropicana Orange & Mango must be kept chilled in the fridge. Give it a shake before you pour and enjoy within 5 days of opening. It is sold in most of the main supermarkets and is generally available for around £2 per one litre carton, although there are often multi-buy special offers with Tropicana fruit juice drinks.
Summary: Another refreshing juice option from the Tropican range.
