      Worth paying more for..!

I do enjoy drinking orange juice with my breakfast most mornings, and tend to buy a supermarket-own branded carton when I am doing my weekly shop. I was enticed into purchasing some small bottles from the well-known "Tropicana" brand recently, however, when I noticed them available as part of a promotional offer in a local grocery store. The small bottles that I purchased are 330 ml in size, and I was able to obtain two of these for around the £1.50 mark. This price is significantly more than I would normally pay for my cartons of supermarket-own branded orange juice, but I have tried several juice products from the Tropicana brand before and have been impressed with their quality, finding it to be superior to other brands I buy regularly. In my opinion, some brands are worth paying a bit more for, and I do feel that Tropicana fits into this category. The packaging for the orange juice that I purchased is different to that shown at the top of the Dooyoo page, as my juice was supplied in small plastic bottles. These bottles are completely recyclable. Made of clear plastic, I am able to see the orange juice contained within quite clearly. It looks natural and fresh, with no 'bits' evident, as per the "Smooth - No Bits" aspect of the product's name. It may be worth noting that there is a version of the juice available that DOES contain 'bits' or pulp, as it were, should this be your preferred option. Pouring the juice from the bottle, I am able to witness the fresh aroma of sweet orange, and I think that the juice looks quite appetising as it fills the glass. Sniffing the top of the glass, I am able to detect the mouth-watering scent of fresh orange that contains a delicate sweetness, but not so much that I am suspicious of added sugar or sweetener. Indeed, I am reassured by the statement on the bottle's label that declares: "Juice squeezed from 100% fresh oranges", in addition to orange juice being the only ingredient on the product's list. Sipping the juice is very pleasant, and I find the texture is gloriously smooth, as hoped and expected. With absolutely no traces of pulp or sediment, the smooth texture of the juice feels very thirst-quenching and natural. I do find too that the juice responds well to being completely chilled prior to serving, with the citrus, 'zesty' flavour being wonderfully refreshing afterwards. Reading the bottle's label, I am reassured again by the whole host of claims and assurances that appear there, not least the claim that the juice only contains sugars that are "Naturally occurring sugars from juice", as well as being pleased that only 150ml of this particular beverage (which is less than half of my small bottle) provides one portion of my recommended daily fruit and vegetable intake. There is nothing artificial about the overall taste - or, indeed, the sweetness - of the Tropicana Smooth juice, which I found a pleasant change from my usual supermarket-own branded juice which feels slightly too saccharine, in comparison. In addition, I find that many of the supermarket brands that I buy nowadays can feel very slightly 'acidic' or too sharp, and often have a sharp aftertaste present after consumption, which I can't say I am particularly fond of. The Tropicana juice, in comparison, feels much more smooth, with a more delicate and natural flavour instead. I do find the overall taste is much more pleasant as a result, with me finding the difference in flavour and strength of the Tropicana juice to be worth paying more for. In addition, I do agree wholeheartedly with the product's name and claim; "Tropicana Pure Premium", as it is indeed pure, and of course, premium in both its quality and flavour. The nutritional information on the bottle's label informs me that 100ml of this juice will provide 48Kcal and 0g fat. The juice is not made from concentrate, instead being 100% natural orange juice. I find that the small, 330ml bottles that I have been purchasing are enough to provide two small glasses of juice, so each bottle lasts me for two days. This is down to personal choice, of course, and some consumers may prefer to purchase larger cartons of the juice, which are available should you prefer. Stockists include good supermarkets such as Tesco. For the reasons outlined in this review, I have been somewhat converted to drinking the Tropicana Smooth Orange Juice recently, and have been enjoying a glass with my breakfast each morning. I will continue to buy it for the foreseeable future, finding its pleasant taste and smooth, natural sweet flavour are the perfect accompaniment to my early morning meal. I feel that top marks are more than deserving in the Dooyoo product rating score on this occasion, and the product comes with my full recommendation, as a result of my positive findings.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A great-tasting smooth juice for people who don't like bits.

Tropicana offers a range of fruit juices and styles. This one is their "Smooth style" orange, advertised as "no bits". While it says "Keep Refrigerated", I've found that if sealed it can survive overnight on the side. However any longer and the taste starts to go, and it can quickly go off. Because this is comparatively fresh food, even in the fridge this has a short shelf-life, often less than 4 weeks from date of purchase. It is expensive, so I tend to buy it only when it is on offer. The taste makes it worth it. It is not as acidic or bland as many other off-the-shelf juices, and actually tastes of oranges. The smooth style is just that - orange juice with no bits. I've never found a "bit" in one, so it's as good as advertised. It hasn't simply strained them out however: the juice has a thick texture, more like milk than water or standard juice. It's good for anyone who doesn't like the texture of normal bits, or if you have a cold or sore throat that makes normal orange difficult to swallow. It might also suit a child with texture issues, or who is just plain fussy. It's high in Vitamin C (one 200ml serving gives you 83% of your RDA) and Folic Acid. While the guidelines on the side suggest a 200ml serving, 150ml of Tropicana gives one of your suggested "five a day" servings of fruit and veg, so you can make it last longer and still get health benefits. While the smaller sizes come in plastic bottles suitable for a lunchbox, Tropicana 1 litre and above comes in a cardboard box with a plastic screw top, making it easy to reseal. All Tropicana lids are colour-coded, this one in a light blue, meaning you can see at a glance which one you are picking up. For people who are eco-friendly this one poses a small quandry: the plastic Tropicana bottles can be recycled, but the cardboard versions are treated and often cannot be. They can be re-used, and I've found they make great (one use) starter plant pots. I do tend to buy this as a treat. It tastes good, it's good for you, and it's easy to store. It gets five stars despite the price, because it is actually worth the extra.

        Disadvantages

Worth paying the extra as it's the best quality

For a long time I ignored Tropicana on the supermarket shelves as the price seemed so much more extravagant compared to other own-brand varieties of orange juice. However I have to admit that it is worth paying the price. It is fresh juice and not from concentrate which you can tell straight away as it lacks that slightly bitter and acidic after taste some orange juice has. It really does taste very nice. It's great that they do a smooth (no bits!) variety as I personally much prefer this to juice with bits of fruit in. It also means it's not such a big deal if you forget to shake it before pouring out a glass. I also like that the caps on the cartons are easy to open. There is no additional plastic plug to remove or silver foil to pull off so no need to resort to opening with a knife when it doesn't work properly! It also comes in smaller bottles that are suitable for having with lunch. As it's not from concentrate, it has to be stored in the fridge and cannot be kept for as long so this limits how much you can buy at any one time, if it's on offer for example. There are offers on Tropicana in the supermarkets reasonably often as it is a popular brand. Also, if you like the Tropicana facebook page and play the juice come on there you can get a money off coupon.

Great tasting, smooth orange juice from Tropicana.

We sometimes get orange juice to have with our breakfast but it's not something we have in the fridge on a daily basis. I did however buy some recently when there was an offer on it. This juice is by Tropicana, a name which is very reputable in the juice world! There are many different flavours you can buy and even with the orange flavour you can buy 'Smooth' or 'With bits'. My favourite is the 'smooth' one as without stating the obvious and not really knowing how else to describe it, it is smooth! The juice comes in a 1litre cardboard carton and is white and orange on the front which conjures up the words wholesome, fresh and healthy in my mind. There is a plastic top from which you pour the juice from at the top of the carton. This is easy to open unlike some other brands of juices. What is also good about this top is that it doesn't get all sticky all round the edges and there are no drips down the side of the carton. The juice flows very easily from the carton and is a bright orange colour, but not so bright that you're wondering what additives they've snuck into it, just a good orangey colour. It tastes best when it is ice cold straight from the fridge. The taste is lovely and refreshing, quite sweet but not sickly at all. It just tastes very fresh and healthy. It also smells of oranges but is not a really strong smell. However, in saying that it appears healthy, the amount of sugar which is actually in the juice is alarming. In just 200ml of juice there are 20g of sugar, they are all naturally occurring sugars but it is still quite a large amount to be having in one drink. It is still a nice drink to have though on an infrequent basis. It is found in most supermarkets and will cost about £2.29 for a litre carton (Tescos prices).

          Yum!

I very rarely purchase whole oranges (although there was a spell of doing it when we purchased our own juicer which now sits gathering dust)......it's just too much of a faff peeling and slicing them and then there's all that stickiness.........so I admit to laziness whereby I prefer to just pour myself a glass from the fridge from a mess free carton. We usually buy Tropicana with bits (extra juicy bits previously reviewed) but in trying to get the children to drink it we realised that it just wasn't going to work because of the said bits so we bought the Smooth No Bits variety instead which like it's bitty counterpart is not from concentrate and is 100% pure squeezed fruit. We did find this to be successful and even my daughter who will not eat any whole fruit will drink the orange juice as long as it is smooth. Not having the bits doesn't detract at all from the zesty, fruity, refreshing taste of the juice, if anything it is more refreshing as there is no clagginess from the bits and the juice flows nicely down the throat and you are safe in the knowledge that you won't have any orange bits stuck in-between your teeth when you smile!! The pure premium juice comes in different sized cartons from 330ml handy bottles (great for picnics or when on the go) to large family sized varieties and others in between so you should be able to find a size that suits your needs without too much trouble and thereby cut down on any wastage. The size I have is 1 litre costing around £2.30 but Tesco for example often do a three for two offer or two for the price of etc. offers. Each 200ml serving contains only 94 calories, 20g of sugar (although this is of course naturally occurring sugars (fructose) from the fruit itself, it contains no fat (so good for the waistline) and no salt so it is a very healthy beverage which also gives you a shot of vitamin C, folic acid and fibre. A 150ml serving of Tropicana Pure Premium provides one of your daily portions of fruit and vegetable which is great, especially if like me you have a child who is not keen on fruit itself. The juice is packaged in a cardboard carton with a screw top that has a seal on it which is broken by twisting the cap in an anti-clockwise direction. Despite having no bits, you should still shake the carton well before serving and consume within 5 days of opening and by the use by date displayed on the top of the carton. Tropicana's cartons are widely recyclable which is always a plus for me in these environmentally challenging times! All in all I can highly recommend the smooth variety of this beverage as it is in my household at least completely family friendly and is tasty and healthy to boot. Thanks for reading. x also on ciao
