Advantages: Tastes totally delicious . Is extremely good for you . No additives .
Disadvantages: Doesn't last long enough !
I don't really eat enough fresh fruit, unless it happens to come in a fresh fruit salad with cream. (Yummy) I was never one for eating fruit out of the fruit bowl, and about the only two fruits I would eat on a regular basis are grapes and bananas.
But this has health implications, (or so says my better half) especially for someone who's as fond of the old frying pan as I am! Herself wants to make sure that her old hubby stays in good nick, and gets his required daily intake of vitamins and minerals. She's forever trying to entice me to eat more fresh fruit, but just recently I think she has got a wee bit tired of the constant battle, and is now resorting to somewhat underhand tactics.
Most health experts agree that oranges are really good for you, but personally I find them messy. All that cutting and pulling off the skin to get to the edible bit, and then all too often it's sour and bitter and practically inedible. I do like orange squash and orange juice though, and this is how my wife is sneakily filling me up with all the goodies that she thinks I'm missing out on.
She's discovered this new (well, new to us) fresh orange juice called Tropicana, that's simply so delicious I simply can't seem to get enough of it. It's got to the stage that she'll have to start hiding it on me soon, as it's just too easy to get at in the fridge, and doesn't last for two minutes when I'm around.
The actual name of this product is "Tropicana Pure Premium Original Orange Juice". (With juicy bits) I put in the "with juicy bits" because you can also get a "smooth style" juice, that doesn't have all the lovely wee bits of orange floating around in it.
What's in it?
Well, possibly the name is a wee bit of a giveaway. It's pure, unadulterated orange juice, freshly squeezed from (I presume) premium grade oranges. Nothing added, and nothing taken away, as they proudly proclaim on the carton. They also state that they use "only the sweetest, juiciest, handpicked oranges and squeeze them fresh from the groves". I can't argue with that! I don't know about the "fresh from the groves" bit, but certainly the juice is fresh and consistently sweet. In fact, if you didn't know it was coming out of a carton, then you'd swear that it had been freshly squeezed that very day.
Tropicana comes in 500ml, 1 litre, and 1.75 litre cartons. They cost Euro2.05, Euro3.32, and Euro5.71 respectively. (Prices from Superquinn.ie) The carton is the same as those that they use for milk, bit far more brightly presented, with loads of useful info on the back and sides, and a picture of a lovely fresh orange on the front.
I'm sure that some of the bumph they have on the carton was responsible for my wife buying this product in the first place.
They tell us that a 250 ml glass (half a small carton) will provide you with your entire recommended daily intake of Vitamin C for the day, and that it's equivalent to you eating one of the five daily portions of either fruit or vegetable that experts suggest are required to keep healthy. It's also fat free, sodium free, and wont affect your cholesterol levels. (Can't be bad!)
By the way, Tropicana is best served cold from the fridge, and will keep for about five days from the date of purchase before it goes off. (It never lasts that long in our household!)
Personally, I love all the juicy wee pieces of orange that float around in this juice, but if you're one of those people that prefer your drinks smooth, then you can opt for the "smooth style" juice.
There are also a host of different flavours to choose from, if orange isn't your thing. There's Golden Grapefruit, (yuck!) Pink Grapefruit, (double yuck!!) Multivitamins, (a blend of different juices, with added vitamins) Sanguinello, (red oranges) Calcium, (orange with added calcium) and Ruby Breakfast. (seems to be a mixture of all the different types)
So far all I've tried is the Original Orange Juice, and I don't think I'll be trying the grapefruit any time soon. But I might try out some of the others. I'll let you know if I do. In the meantime, I'll stick with the Original Orange, which is totally delicious.
The only problem I have now is that my teenage daughter and wife have a habit of drinking it all before I can get my mitts on it!
