Advantages: Excellent taste
Disadvantages: Expensive
Yesterday I had a keen craving for some fruit juice and spotted a discounted carton of Tropicana smooth orange juice (no bits) in my local Co-op. 1 litre usually costs 2 pounds 24 p, too rich for my blood, but a reduction to 1 pound 49 p was enough of a trigger for me to part with my hard earned cash. This is the first time I have tried this product so I was keen to find out whether the price is justified.
What is it? Tropicana produce a range of premium refrigerated fruit juices. This product is described as "Fresh sunshine in every glass" The orange juice is further described by the manufacturer as having a sharp, zesty but exactly sweet enough taste.
Packaging: The juice itself is contained in a long rectangular shaped 1 litre carton. Thankfully the carton is easy to open through the use of a re-sealable pastic bottle lid. I've had too many bad experiences trying to open milk cartons and spilling the contents everywhere... The carton is recyclable and contains a bright coloured picture of oranges on the main display panel. The Tropicana logo is unmistakable.
Smell and appearance: The orange juice does not smell overly sweet and also seems quite tangy. It is a very aromatic and enticing smell. The juice is a very evenly distributed sunny orange colour with no obvious signs of orange bits.
Taste: The orange juice tastes fantastic and really quenches the thirst. The juice is not overly sweet and you can actually taste real oranges. Although the claim of "Fresh sunshine in every glass" sounds like the brainchild of a Tropicana corporate marketing executive, I actually feel like I'm having a refreshing Summer drink.
Value for money: As I mentioned earlier, this product is expensive, but given the excellent taste I would think about buying it. Maybe I should pick up a carton of this instead of a packet of beers to justify the expense...
Healthy?: 150 ml of Tropicana counts as one of your 5 a day (recommended daily portions of fruit and vegetables) which is a bonus. The product is also high in Vitamin C, 100 ml of this product equates to 50% of your recommended daily allowance which should stave off the scurvy for another day. However, the juice does also contain 9 g per 100 ml sugars, but these are sugars occurring naturally from the juice and are not added sugars. Refreshingly the juice only contains 100% orange juice with no artificial flavourings or additives - if you want those try some Sunny delight! All in all this product seems quite healthy for a soft drink.
Overall: The excellent taste of this product really quenches the thirst and I actually feel like it is Summer again. Despite the expense, I would definitely consider buying this product again and cutting down on the beers to justify the purchase.
Summary: I would definitely consider buying this product again
