Tropicana Pure Premium Orange Juice
Advantages: Tasty, no additives
I never used to really like or enjoy orange juice, however in recent years it has become a staple in my diet. As many people who read my reviews regulary will be aware, I struggled with the eating disorder Anorexia in the past which I am 99% recovered from. As part of my recovery plan I had to incorporate pure, un diluted fruit juice into my diet as a regular alternative to water and diet pepsi/coke, as obviously it is much healthier and has more nutrients. Orange juice is a healthy, nutritious drink that helps to mantain my healthy sugar levels and it boosts my calorie intake up by a little too, as well as giving me a generous amount of vitamin C. I used to just buy the Tesco value orange juice, and was quite content with it, however at my friends house a few months ago she gave me a glass of tropicana. It was gorgeous, as sad as it sounds, and much, much tastier than the value stuff I was used to! Since then, Tropicana has been a regular in my shopping basket. I certianly will never be going back to the value stuff after trying this.
This orange juice can be bought in either a smooth version without bits, or with bits. I drink the smooth version purely because I can't stand orange juice with bits in, however my boyfriend is a fan of the version that has bits in. The bits are quite fine and not chunky or blobby, however I still don't really want to try it! The smooth version that I like is very lightweight in texture if that makes sense, it glides into my mouth and down my throat and it's incredibly refreshing. It's not one of those drinks that is thick which I like as it is much more thirst quenching. Tropicana describe this orange juice as being a great tasting, pure orange juice made with fresh oranges - it is not from concentrate. It is naturally nutritious and each 8 ounce glass of the juice is equivellent to two servings of fruit. The juice obviously has plenty of vitamin C in it too, which is great for mantaining a healthy immune system and it also keeps bones strong. There are no preservatives, water or sugar added either - this is simply pure and fresh orange juice.
The taste is fresh and it's much 'softer' (if that makes sense - it's not got that kind of hard edge to it that some of the cheaper brands have) and less citrussy than a majority of other brands of orange juice, it tastes sweet but not overlly sweet with a subtle citrussy edge. It hasn't got a sour or acidic taste to it at all and it doesn't taste wattered down. It is very rich and flavoursome while not being overpowering, I personally don't think it tastes like an average glass of orange juice - it definetly lives upto its name as a premium brand and the texture is so thin with a silky feel to it. It tastes completely natural and it's really refreshing, especially when I have a glass with my breakfast. It doesn't have a nasty, fake after taste at all. The packaging of it is easy to open, it comes in either large cartons (1 litre), smaller multi pack cartons (250ml) or plastic bottles (330ml). I usaully buy the 1 litre bottle which is made of cardboard. It has a plastic screw top lid which has a seal on it, this is easy to break and the lid can be screwed back on. I like this more than the cartons that you have to cut to open as it keeps the juice much fresher.
The branding is nice and simple and the packaging is recycable. I really like this brand of orange juice and the only disadvantage that I can think of is the price. For a 1 litre bottle it'll set you back by around £2.30, and a 1 litre bottle doesn't last very long (not in my house anyway!) Most supermarkets have a long term offer on this juice though - buy 2 for £4, which I think is a ridiculous price and I usually buy one 1 litre bottle whenever I really want it - it's not a regular brand that I buy purely due to the price, however I would say that I get through 4 or 5 bottles of it a month - drinking cheaper brands of orange juice after trying this is horrible as I know what i'm missing out on, haha.
I store this orange juice on my kitchen worktop as my fridge is ridiculously tiny and doesn't hold very much at all. The orange juice tastes fine at room temperature as well as chilled, I have even had it warmed up when I was pregnant & feeling run down as it's a very comforting and soothing kind of drink when it's warm. The juice, once opened should be consumed within about a week (although Tropicana state to use within five days after opening), however a 1 litre carton only lasts for around 3 days in my house hold as we all love it! Even my neice loves it and she hates fruit, yet she will quite happily drink a glass of this which I think is good as atleast that way she's getting all the vitamins and goodness that would be found in fruit. If you have a child I certianly would reccomend giving them this to drink as an alternative to suggary pop or cordial as this tastes just as good and it's natural and much healthier. If you're concerned about the high sugar content then you could always water it down a little.
The calorie contents isn't too bad considering how satisfyingly sweet it is and per 100ml serving it has 107 calories along with 22.5 grams of carbs (all of which is sugar) which I guess is kind of high however it has plenty of goodness in it to balance this out. It has no saturated fat, chloesterol or sodium. For anyone who likes the sound of Tropicana but don't like orange juice there are plenty of other flavours - apple, mango, grapefruit and so on. Despite the price, I think this orange juice is brilliant and it's by far my favourite drink and the minute. It's just like drinking freshly squeezed orange juice, without spending 20mins plus juicing them! Overall I would reccomend this brand of orange juice as it's completely natural with no added rubbish and it tastes much better than a majority of other brands that I have tried. To sum it up:
Tasty, natural, healthy, refreshing
Contains lots of goodness including vitamin C and fibre. Not from concentrate
No sodium, preservatives or saturated fat
Range of different versions/flavours
So, as you can see the advantages highly outweigh the disadvantages and I give this juice 4/5 stars, marking it down because of the price. Some people may argue that you're paying for the high quality, which is true - it's brillant quality but I think the RRP is just a little too much, especially in the current economic climate where a many families don't prioritise buying 'premium' brands of drinks on their weekly shops and can't afford to fork out £2.50 or so on a litre of juice. I think if the price was 30-40p cheaper though, or was on offer more I would of 100% awarded it 5/5 stars!
Summary: Reccomended if you don't mind the price
