Disadvantages: Weird taste

WHY I BOUGHT THEM --

Following a number of yukky skin infections over Christmas, I decided to take a bit more care of myself in the coming year. So along with a juicer and a food steamer I invested in some of these tea bags. Now you may not think that 88p is much of an investment, but hey.

PRICE AND VARIETIES --

The bags are available in boxes of 20 ( 88p) 50 (£1.44) or 80's (£1.99) from Tesco's. There is currently a 20p off offer on various varieties of the Twinings Green Tea including Earl Grey Green Tea, Jasmin Green Tea, Lotus Green Tea and Pure Green Tea (Source www.tesco.com on 23/01/05)

MY EXPERIENCE --

I had tried plain Green Tea on a previous health kick and it lurked in the back of my cupboard for over a year - you see it looks like your pee after a night on the booze and I couldn't face them.

The added orangeness of the Lotus flowers in this blend has made all the difference to me.... it has made something healthy enjoyable rather than something I drink under sufferance. In fact the tea bags even smell pleasant.

You prepare the tea like any other herbal tea, with just water and no milk . I would not recommend adding sugar or honey as it doesn't seem to gel with the flavour, which is slightly savoury.

I would also advise you not to leave the tea bag in for too long, a minute or so will do as the tea does tend to turn a little on the bitter side. They also see to taste nicer when the tea is left to cool a little.

I have personally found this tea to be benificial in terms of my anxiety disorder which means that caffiene is a no go and that I must keep hydrated. This tea certainly is refreshing and it contains neglible amounts of the dreaded loopy juice.

THE SCIENCE BIT (( BECAUSE I'M WORTH IT)) --

It has been claimed that these teas have antioxidant properties, which apparently reduce cell damage in the body. This process has been linked with the prevention of coronary heart disease, reduction of the ageing process and boosting the immune system.

Further links on this topic can be viewed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antioxidant

COMPANY INFORMATION --

While Twinings are not part of the ''fair trade movement'' , the company have been part of the Tea Sourcing Partnership since 1997. The Partnership ''share responsibility for the social and ethical conditions involved in the sourcing of tea. Five core areas are independently audited: Employment (including minimum age and wage levels), education, maternity, health and safety, housing.'' (Source : www.twinings.com).

Twinings produce a wide range of teas including organic. A comprehensive list of these can be found at the aforementioned website.

I quite like this one, damned odd taste the first few times you drink it though!
