Advantages: Green tea benefits
Disadvantages: Too orangey for me
The Twinings Green tea range is one of my favourite and I have tried all of the flavours. This review is going to concentrate on the Orange and Lotus Flower green tea. It is described as a lightly aromatic green tea with a delicate scented flavour. This distinctly oriental blend combines the zesty flavour of orange with a delicate hint of lotus flowers, which have long been associated with purity in China.
It has actually been since ancient times that the lotus has been a divine symbol in Asian traditions and a symbol of purity. According to an article I read, "Hindus revere it with the gods Vishnu, Brahma, and the goddesses Lakshmi and Sarasvati. Often used as an example of divine beauty, Vishnu is often described as the 'Lotus-Eyed One'. Its unfolding petals suggest the expansion of the soul. The growth of its pure beauty from the mud of its origin holds a benign spiritual promise. Particularly Brahma and Lakshmi, the divinities of potency and wealth, have the lotus symbol associated with them. In Hindu iconography, deities often are depicted with lotus flowers as their seats."
Wow, so this tea has a lot to live up to, by drinking it I almost feel like it should make me pure and give me a sense of calm or something!
The health benefits of green tea are now widely known. It contains a natural source of antioxidants which helps protect the body from free radicals. Recent medical research shows that regular green tea drinkers may have lower chances of heart disease and developing certain types of cancer. Other unproven scientific benefits also include stopping diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
Green tea is also shown to speed up your metabolism and can help with weight loss. I always try to have green tea in the evenings now because it's a lot lighter than having tea with milk in my opinion and I do feel it could help with keeping my weight down. Green tea also has a natural source of antioxidants that protect the body from damage as well so it really is a very good drink to have.
The best thing about the Green Tea range from Twinings is that that add some flavours to liven up the green tea if the plain taste is not something you enjoy. What I like about them though is that even though they have fruit flavourings, in my opinion they are not a Fruit Tea, which can often have a very fruity and overpowering taste and that is the only thing you can taste. These teas are still green teas with a hint of flavouring. However, I do find that the Orange and Louts flower is a bit too much like fruit to me. I find the orange very strong and I really think it overpowers the tea and does turn it into a fruit tea. I find it quite sharp and a bit too strong to drink at times. I don't really think the lotus flower offers any taste per say, except perhaps making it a little bit herby but apart from that, this tea to me just tastes like orange.
Green Tea was first discovered in China in around 2737BC. Legend has it that it was discovered by the emperor Shen-nung when tea leaves accidently fell in the boiling water he was making. His servants were going to throw it away but he enjoyed the taste so much that it developed from there. Green tea is made from the same leaf as black tea, the Camellia Sinensis, however it is brewed differently. Green tea is heated prior to rolling so oxidation does not occur meaning the leaf retains its green colour.
Twinings do a good job of packaging their tea. The box is a light green colour with Twinings on it and a picture of lovely ripe segment of juicy orange on the front on the front to let you know what flavour you are getting. It also has a picture of a white lotus flower on the front which is really pretty. In each pack you get 20 bags for £1.18 a pack. It's a little bit more expensive that just says a big box of PG Tips but well worth it for a change.
As I mentioned before the health benefits are fantastic and also the calorie count is virtually nil. Per 100g when drunk without milk the tea contains less than 5 calories.
Not one of my favourite flavours but I'm sure some of you will like it.
