Advantages: Tastier than standard peppermint tea, alleged health benefits, not expensive
Disadvantages: Nothing I can think of; give it a try!
Just waiting for the kettle to boil... ah, there we go.
It's always exciting to see a flavour of Twining's that I've not seen before, so I snapped this one up immediately.
The immediate smell that rises in the steam is a pleasant, sweet aroma of peppermint. Compared to a pure peppermint tea, though, the smell is broader and richer. This, presumably is due to the presence of nettle. In fact, the contents of each bag is 50% each of nettle and peppermint, and it is rather a nice feeling to be drinking something so pure. Twining's boxes always stress their commitment to the quality of their herbs, and that they are "gently steamed to protect their delicate taste", and in a purely herbal tea, I suppose this is a particularly important factor.
I think it's cooled down enough to taste properly now! This infusion is naturally sweet; normally I would add a tiny bit of honey to fruit and herbal teas, but I'm glad I didn't in this case. It's pepperminty as you would expect, but there is a background richness that comes from the nettle, and a slight pepperiness as well. It's a little more bitter than standard pepperm int tea too, but personally I am happy with this as normal tea is generally about this bitter.
So, in conclusion, I definitely prefer this to Twining's pure peppermint tea, which is probably it's closest competitor. As to it's health benefits, I can't make any qualified claims, but it is refreshing and apparently aids digestion. It's also caffeine free, if that's an issue for you. Like all Twining's teas, it's fairly inexpensive; I got this box of 20 teabags for about 80p at a local shop.
Thanks for reading, I'm going to finish my tea!
Summary: Apparently, nettle is what peppermint tea has been missing all these years!
