Advantages: A good dietary contribution to healthy living.

Disadvantages: Tastes really awful.

After recently visiting a skin care specialist I came home with all kinds of advice from a new healthier skin regime to various nutritional information to help benefit both mind and body alike. One of the products I was advised to have a go with was Green Tea so I figured I would put it to the test. I have noticed improvements with my skin and my overall well being after using the product though it was in conjunction with a new skin care programme and dietary change but I'm not convinced that Green tea can live up to some of its claims like for example "weight loss", there is no evidence for this though there is some scientific data suggesting that regular green tea drinkers may be at less risk of heart disease and various types of cancer and so I'll drink a cup or 2 to that.

WHAT IS GREEN TEA AND WHERE ON EARTH DOES IT COME FROM?

Green tea is a type of tea made solely from the leaves and buds of Camillia sinensis [a species of plant] that has undergone minimum oxidisation during processing .Green tea originates from China where legend has it that it was discovered over 4000 years ago purely by accident and presumably by some completely crazy chinaman sat underneath a camellia sinensis bush boiling water that was just too lazy to remove the falling leaves from his pot and not only decided to drink it but rather crazily decided he quite liked the taste as well ,proving only of course that Gordon Ramsey isn't 4000 years old after all else this vile bizarre tea drink would never have made it past the ancient burning stove let alone have stood the test of time.

WHAT ARE THE BENIFITS OF GREEN TEA?

Green tea is a natural source of benificial antioxidents.

THE PRICE AND TASTE TEST

The first time I purchased green tea I bought the Twinings range which cost £1 from Asda as opposed to £1.29 from other leading supermarkets for a box of 20 and followed the brewing instructions. Boil kettle, put tea bag in cup, pour water into cup and allow to stand for at least a minute before taking the tea bag out and of course don't add milk which put me off from the start being used to black tea with lots of milk and 2 big fat spoonfuls of sugar. Take tea bag out and away we go into a taste frenzy the equivalent to watching a "saw "movie with your overly religious violence hating gran,a particularly uncomfortable and unpleasant taste experience, I mean the stuff truly is vile much like drinking a hot algae ridden pond, you can always wait till it goes cold and try it that way but trust me in doesn't get any better, even though you can drink it quicker it unbelievably yet truly really does get worse. Now it's not really twinings fault that I hate it so much, it's just green tea full stop tastes vile whatever the brand and I've tried a few. I have made a decision about twinings though and that is to never to by it again purely on the basis that asda's own is 77.p or at the moment buy 2 for £1 that only tastes slightly more pond like than twinings, it's just I don't see a great deal of point spending above the odds on a product I don't like the taste of and that has nothing except a prettier box in its favour.

SUMMARY

All in all the Green tea brands all taste roughly the same so if like me you hate the taste but want the health benefits then you're better off just buying the cheapest brand like asdas own.

Summary: Buy a cheaper brand.

Don't believe all the hype about green tea being full of antioxidants, it has the same amount as black (or normal) tea but has different types. So any tea is good for you but to get the full effect drink both in moderation.

I prefer the oolong tea which is slightly fermented and a little less bitter. The other one I llike is Rooibos or red bush tea - also cafeine free

Try it with a slice of lemon in it or buy the ones with an added fruity flavour, hides (thinly!) the shudder inducing flavour of green tea!! Good review!
