Advantages: Where do I start? How could I live without my tea? Oh well, see above :-)

Disadvantages: Addiction?!? Nah, it's worth it :-)

When I saw a category about tea here on Dooyoo, my eyes lit up and I had to celebrate. How? By boiling the kettle, of course and settling down with my favourite drink in the whole wide world – a cup of tea. There really is nothing quite like tea. I rarely drink coffee, pop even less often and not much alcohol either – the odd glass of wine from time to time, Bailey’s at Christmas. So tea sustains me, usually more than ten cups a day.

Yes, I am an addict. I admit it. It was only last year that I found out though, I had been in denial until then. But in January 2000, I began to diet seriously, which included stopping the tea and drinking bottled water instead. (Sorry, tap water is NOT my thing, unless it’s boiled, added to a tea bag and some milk!) In a day or two, I felt quite ill and had an awful headache, which felt like I had an horrendous hangover! After doing some research on the Internet, I found out it was a symptom of caffeine withdrawal! ARGHH!!!

Still, I now admit it. Not that I can do anything about it though. I can certainly think of worse addictions. My ideal tea is probably Twinings Earl Grey tea bags. I think tea is better in bags, I really can’t be bothered with tea leaves and bits floating around in my cup, ugh…

Unfortunately, we haven’t got the budget to afford Earl Grey very often, so I have to content myself with Typhoo One Cup, where we get 120 tea bags for around £2. Mmm. Much better. We seem to buy a new box each week, I wonder who goes through all of those then? My partner works full-time and prefers pop anyway. My kids virtually never drink tea. Okay, I confess…

I am impatient. Once I decided I want something, I want it now, if not yesterday. So I can’t be bothered with tea that needs minutes of infusing – nope, once the kettle is boiled, I just want to put the water in, give it a bit of a stir to get the water the right colour, add a splash of mil
k, no sugar nowadays (trying to give it up) and hey presto! Drink it while it’s as hot as possible – that’s a taste thing as well as the impatience.

Typhoo always seems to be reliable. The bags don’t split, it tastes great and it is easy to get the right balance of cuppa. It’s not too strong or too weak, although of course this can be altered slightly by leaving the bag in longer, adding more or less milk, etc. Hey, I’m sure you know how to make a cup of tea!

As I write this, I am gulping down my restorative caffeine in the shape of yet another cup of Typhoo. Tea is very British somehow – I know it’s originally from India or China or whatever, but it FEELS like the national drink. It is soothing in times of crisis, it quenches your thirst and tastes great. I need a cuppa first thing in the morning in order to wake up properly, and I have one last thing at night so I’m not thirsty. I haven’t thought of any justifications for the other eight to twenty cups I have in between!!

You know that advert for Robinsons where the blonde actress informs us in a superior way that we need eight glasses of water a day, to survive? Then she tells us to add some of the afore-mentioned juice? Well, I suggest an alternative… Get those eight glasses of water, put them in the kettle and – well, you can guess the rest! Long live the cuppa!!

I'm not a tea fan (one cup a week round at my in-laws does me!) but nevertheless a very good opinion.

Well, I didn't think it was long-winded (you should see some of *my* more impassioned ops!) I thought it was great.
My mum had caffeine withdrawal symptoms. She decided to do something about it - by drinking the same number of cuppas a day, but just drinking less tea each time. It worked, too.
Thanks for a fun op.
