Advantages: good real ale.

Disadvantages: not available everywhere.

The Uley Brewery, Gloucestershire, is responsible for a range of excellent ales that are gradually becoming available around the country. I only know of two of their beers, but suspect there may be a few more by now.

Old Spot beer (named after the Goucester Old Spot Pig) has been with us for some years now. It's quite a light brown beer and can taste a little yeasty. It seldom produces much of a head, and is very refreshing.

Old Ric - the only beer to be named after a living landlord at this time. Personally, I prefer Old Spot; I couldn't define what it is, but there's something about the flavour of Old Ric that I don't get along with so well. But both are popular.

Neither of these beers are particuarly strong in terms of alcohol content.

I am a firm believer in real ale, and would encourage anyone who likes beer to give them a try. Old Spot and Old Ric both have real character, and although the beers themseleves have only been around for a decade or so, they have an authenticity that belies thier youth.
