I really enjoy drinking rose wine in the summer. There is nothing nicer in my book than to sit outside and watch the sun set with good company and a glass of chilled rosé. I am always on the look out for wines on offer and when I spotted Villa Maria rose in my local Tesco for £5.99 a bottle I was keen to give it a try. Villa Maria usually sells for £7.99 so at that price I hoped it would be good!

The wine is a lovely deep pink colour and just shouts summer evenings to me! Villa Maria is from the Hawkes bay region in New Zealand, a region where you can expect warm days and cool nights, perfect for grapes. Villa Maria Rose is made from a mix of grapes including 65% merlot, 15% malbec, 10% syrah and 4% pinotage. The result, for me is near perfect!

On opening the screw top bottle and pouring a glass I could immediately detect the aroma of ripe strawberries, honestly! I can't normally detect anything much as far as wine aroma (or bouquet to use the correct terminology)! But this bottle was different. The winemaker says and I quote- this wine has a fragrant bouquet of fresh rose petals, confectionary strawberry and guava notes dominate the nose. I'm not sure about those guava notes or the rose petals but I could definitely detect ripe strawberries!

Next for the all important taste test. My first sip of this wine was pure heaven! I could really taste strawberries. The wine is not too sweet or dry, but simply delicious! I really can't praise this wine enough; it is simply the nicest Rose I have ever tasted.

Perhaps I should give a word of warning this wine can really pack a punch as I discovered when I went to get up ! It contains 13.5 % alcohol so treat it with respect! The problem it tastes so light and refreshing it is easy to drink far too much!

I have just been to Tesco and bought another 12 bottles before the offer ends. A lovely Rose and very highly recommended!

Summary: rose wine from New Zealand
