Advantages: 8.5% alcohol, black beer.
Disadvantages: 8.5% alcohol, black beer
Vondel, is a black German beer which although is quite rare to locate, it will reward anyone who will bother to find it. Having found it only in Greece, I am not sure whether it is available or not in the UK. As I am not a beer expert I am writing this as a really impressed customer. To tell you the truth I bought the beer for the first time due to its high percentage of alcohol. At 8.5% its one of the strongest beers out there. Moreover Vondel has a strong shampagne-like scent and a wine like texture. It is quite bitter although not as thick as Guinness, with an extremely pleasant after taste. I do not think that it would compliment any kind of food, since its taste is so individual that I think it is better to be enjoyed on its own. You can accompany it with some sort of nuts, as long as they are not sweet, or even better with something good to smoke (depending to what you fancy). Definitely not a beer to get drunk on, I expect that hangovers from Vondel are going to be totally devastating, it is more of a novelty beer that you will buy out of curiosity. Its unique taste will probably deter most people, in order to leave room for the dedicated fans.
