I am a committed tea drinker; in fact tea bags are at the top of my list of things to pack when we go on holiday! I like to drink breakfast tea during the day but in the evening I like a cup of earl Grey. I usually buy Twinings earl Grey tea bags but recently spotted Waitrose own brand earl Grey of offer so thought I would give them a try.
Earl Grey tea is named after Charles Grey an English Earl who became prime minister in 1830. It is said that a Chinese mandarin, in gratitude for saving his sons life gave the earl a gift of tea. Whether this is true or not the fact is that Charles Grey enjoyed this particular blend of tea and always had it served in his drawing room. Later Twinings manufactured the tea under the name earl Grey.
Many producers now use a blend of Indian and Ski Lankan black tea to make earl Grey tea although traditionally China tea was used. Waitrose use pure china tea in their Earl Grey tea bags.
Waitrose Earl Grey tea bags come in 50 or 100 bag packs. I bought a 50 tea bag pack to try them. They normally cost £1.29 for 50 bags or £2.29 for 100 bags. Certainly less than Twinings.
Waitrose wrap their tea bags in 2 individual foil packs of 25 tea bags. This is a good idea as it keeps the tea bags fresh for longer. The tea bags are square and have a slightly rough as in recycled appearance if you understand what I mean!
Earl Grey tea is flavoured with oil of Bergamot and this gives it is lovely delicate fragrant scent. Bergamot is a small acidic orange although the tea doesn’t taste acidic.
The taste.
*********
I love earl grey tea both with and without milk depending on what mood I am in! The Waitrose brand certainly had the same smell as Twinings earl Grey and the tea looked the same too. However the taste was slightly more bitter and it had a distinctive musty taste. I really didn’t like the taste and neither did a friend. I did finish the box but will be buying Twinings in future, offer or no offer!

- 31/10/07 I don't like tea, so I wouldn't expect to like Earl Grey, no matter how nice or nasty! |
