Advantages: Tastes nice
Disadvantages: Quite expensive, very sweet
For some people it's the Coca Cola advert, for others it's the first robin they see. For me, the first sign that Christmas is on it's way is that Whittard of Chelsea start to stock their Mulled Wine tea again! Only available in the months leading up to Christmas, this is a delicious alternative to real Mulled Wine.
Instant Teas
Whittard do a wide range of different Instant Teas in lots of different flavours, Mulled Wine being one of them. They are very easy to make, just put a few teaspoons into a mug, add boiling water and voila! Hot, tasty tea. The recommended amount to use is 4 - 5 teaspoons, but I found that made the tea far too strong, so I use 2 - 3 depending on how sweet I fancy it.
The particular flavour is only released at Christmas and during the months leading up the big day, they have near constant tasting sessions instore to try and tempt us to buy.
Taste
All of the different flavours of Instant Tea I've tried are very sweet and this is no exception. The first time I tried to make it up following the instructions it was so sweet it actually hurt my teeth! I know it sounds strange, but it was a similar feeling to biting into ice cream. After a second go, I found the right ratio of tea/water for me and it tasted much better! It does have a bit of a kick to it which is an almost sour taste, not in a bad way, I'd liken it to the sour sweets I used to get as a kid! After the kick has gone you are left with a fruity taste, which although it tastes nice, there's not much resemblance to the Mulled Wine it's supposed to taste like.
Like all of the Instant Teas, this can be drunk hot or cold. I've tried it both ways and they both taste good! I found it better to make the drink up hot then allow to cool. This way the granules dissolved better and didn't leave sediment in the bottom of the cup.
Mulled Wine Instant Tea can be bought from their website or from any of their stores on the high street. It's priced at £5 for 500g or 3 for £10 which on first glance looks quite expensive, but if used sparingly (not following the instructions!) it can last quite a while.
Summary: Great tasting tea
