 ... is as black as coal both in the bottle and in the glass, the result of the use of roasted black malt and oats to colour the beer and give it its characteristic biscuity taste. It pours smoothly but, unlike Irish Stout, without a pronounced head. However, this is not a bottle-conditioned beer so undue care does not need to be taken in the pouring as there is no residual yeast in the bottle. I have to confess that I do like Wychwood's beers. However, I'm not a huge fan of stouts. I fail to see the attraction of Guinness although it's true that the Guinness you get in Ireland is a magnitude of difference from the the stuff available over here. In fact, as far as stout goes, over here I drink Murphy's. Not any more. Whilst whiling away some time in Sainsbury's I happened to notice Wychwood's Black Wych (yes, that is how they spell it) on the shelf. Now, I'm very familiar with Wychwood's Hobgoblin and have enjoyed its delights on many occasions.
