Advantages: Nice taste.
Disadvantages: Not cheap
The Brewery
Wychwood brewery is based in my hometown of Witney in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside. The town is by far better known for blankets, however, the reputation of the town’s brewery is beginning to overtake that fame. Founded by John Williams Clinch, the first brewery was built in 1841 not far from the site of the current location. The brewery was built ther eto be close to the River Windrush from which the water for the beer was taken (and which recently flooded my livingroom!)
Today, the brewery is not only one of the most famous local ale producers, but also the owner of the Hobgoblin pub chain. The current range of beers include The Legendary Hobgoblin, Fiddler’s Elbow, Wychcraft and several other beers.
Duchy Originals
Known now as a mark of quality on a range of products, the Duchy company produce all sorts of goods all to the same high quality. The Original Organic Ale was the first to be made by Wychood. Now the range has been extended to include a light summer ale and a heavier winter ale. This original is ruby in colour and has a light sparkle. The beer is made using a rare organic barley –Plumage Archer- which is harvested from the Price of Wales’ Farm in Highgrove.
Opinion
This ale has a good depth of flavour and as with most organic beers I have tasted, the quality is very pronounced. It is fairly light and has a bitter-sweet aftertaste which is very pleasant. The cultivation of Plumage Archer was well worth the hassle as this is definitely what gives the beer its distinctive taste. This isn’t a beer to drink all night though, not only because of the cost but because it is a bit heavy to have more than two or three bottles in one evening.
Summary: A nice beer to accompany food.
