Advantages: Thick, creamy & rich, health benefits and well-priced
Disadvantages: None
I'm a big fan of milkshakes, especially chocolate ones, served thick & cold. Frijj has been one of the nicest ones I've bought from a shop (which I've already reviewed), but I decided to give Yazoo a go as I saw a huge bottle was under a £1... twice as much milkshakey goodness and a little less money! It's described as chocolate milk, so I thought it would be quite watery; I was pleasantly surprised and now I'm addicted to the stuff!
Yazoo chocolate milk (made by Campina) is described as being the 'healthier milkshake that's packed full of flavour', and it does have it's health benefits so it's easy to justify drinking as much as you want :o) It's low in fat , has no artificial colours or sweeteners & less than 5% added sugar, and has plenty of calcium & vitamin B. I know all of these things are particularly good for children and that chocolate milk is often seen as a child's thing, but this is more of a milkshake, and a very good one at that! Each 100ml contains 70 cals and 1.5g fat, which is very similar to Frijj.
I've come across this in most supermarkets & convenience stores, and I believe it's sold in 3 sizes: multipack of 4x200ml (£1.34), 472ml (53p) and large 1L bottle (88p)(prices are from Tesco). I buy the 1L bottles as they're better value for money, though once opened they should be drank like milk; although the end by date may be very good, once opened it should be consumed within a few days and stored in the fridge during that time. As you can see from the picture, the packaging is fairly plain and simple; a brown plastic bottle with a screw top. I would suggest that when storing this in the fridge you keep it upright, or ensure the top in definitely on properly first as I find they're not the most secure of screw tops. Yazoo also comes in strawberry, banana and vanilla flavour, though I'm yet to try these yet (that's something for next weeks shopping!).
How does it taste? They recommend you shake well before serving, so I tend to give this a very thorough shake and it comes out thick and frothy. The taste is rich, so it's great if you need a chocolate kick. The texture, though I thought it would be watery, is surprisingly thick and creamy. When it's served nice and cold it's delicious, and tastes like a quality dairy product rather than manufactured, watered down poop. I think the price, for the 1L bottle especially, is very good value for money. I only drink small amounts at a time so I get plenty of glasses from the bottle.
If you're a fan of chocolate/milkshakes then this is definitely one I would recommend trying. It's usually found in the aisles, rather than the chiller, by other packaged milkshakes. Like I said, I was quite surprised by this as it turned out to be the best tasting, thick & full-flavoured milkshake I've bought from a supermarket.
Summary: Fab milkshake that's delicious served cold!
