It’s strange the little things you remember from your childhood and whenever I think of my Uncle Fred, who died many years ago, I recall how he always proclaimed “I like my tea so strong that the spoon stands up in it!” This always perplexed me because I just couldn’t understand how such a feat could be accomplished and it was several years before I understood that some phrases and sayings just aren’t meant to be taken literally! As I grew up I realised I had inherited this family trait.
