Advantages: A good taste

Disadvantages: None

A way to the north of Watford,
A mite to the east of Leeds,
Where the blue and misty moorland
Meets the gusty northern seas;

Where the cricket ball flies further
And the fish need an iron net,
The tea creates a fearsome brew
And the beer is stronger yet..........

Ok, ok. The above bit of nonsense was the start of something I wrote in fun for my Yorkshire husband, Big Mal. Yorkshire is to England what Texas is to the States. Everything in this biggest county is bigger, stronger, braver etc. etc. Therefore, since the Yorkshireman is always right (and dammit he generally turns out to be in the end) he needs stronger and braver sustenance. But, since they are also sensitive souls, their sustenance has to be of the finer taste as well.

We lesser southerners are lucky that Taylors of Harrogate have exported their tea to the south of Watford. But then they export their tea everywhere else in the world as well, so we shouldn't feel too priviledged.

Yorkshire tea really is a splendid brew for those who like a good cuppa. This is a tea for those whose taste for the leaf is direct and without need for the pale and perfumed variety of leaf. They tell us that one tea bag makes two cups of tea, and this is so. Being a philistine and sadly nowdays having only to brew for myself, I make my tea in the cup. In goes the unfussy square tea bag, in goes the water straight off the boil, a quick stir round and there is a lovely, refreshing drink. No need to stand in order to brew. The tea has plenty of colour and oodles of taste. Refreshing is the word. I must drink gallons of the stuff, and any other brew is, to me, less satisfying.

Taylors of Harrogate have been carefully blending tea for over 100 years and is still a family business rightly proud of their product. Taylors even make tea to suit the water in your area should it be especially hard. Just check out their website and they will send you a
water-testing kit. After all the water in the south is bound to be less than the standard expected by a Yorkshireman. They will then tell you which of their teas is most suited to your water. How about that then?

Yorkshire tea is available in all supermarkets and I am told is a popular brand although not one of the cheaper teas. Because it has an uncompromising strength it is very good value. The box it is packed in stands out with it's attractive and colourful scenes of Dales life, broken by a vertical red banner which is also broken by the name Yorkshire Tea in bold white lettering on a black background. It certainly doesn't hide it's presence on the shelf.

For those of us who care about these things, Taylors of Harrogate donate £100,000 per year towards planting and community projects in the countries in which their tea (and coffee) is grown. They have been doing this for some years now.

If you would like to know more about this beautiful brew, the Taylors website can be found on http://www.yorkshiretea.com

I'm not sure I've ever drunk Yorkshire Tea, but it's good to see them give money to community projects rather than putting monkeys in dresses like my brand does <looks down ashamedly to the unethically sound mug of PG Tips beside him>.

Great op, and welcome to my CoT!

Wonderful op and very informative. I have saw Yorkshire Tea where I work but never tasted it. Must try some day. To be honest I am hooked on Nambarrie Tea - its produced locally here although you can get it in Tesco in Scotland. Not sure about England though!

Hard water tea! Bloomin picky northeners. Can't they just learn to drink the same sludge we have to cope with!

Great op, I don't think that we'll be getting any though, as my lady comes from t'uther side of Penines. She won't be having any of that White rose nonsense!
